DYK South Carolina outpaces the nation in number of cases and deaths for colorectal cancer? Yet colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Getting regular preventive screenings and doctor visits can make a difference for your health. Follow up with your doctor to stay on-track. Here’s more on how screenings catch cancer early: https://tinyurl.com/BCBSSC-Cancer-Screenings.

Common FAQs about these preventative screenings:

❓ The amount in my doctor’s bill is not what I was expecting for preventive care. Is there anything I can do?
If this happens, call the number on the back of your card and we will walk through the charges with you. If the care you received does not match the details in the claim we received, we may be able to work with you and your doctor to resolve it.

❓ Are screenings covered for me if I’m younger than 45 but at a higher risk?
According to CDC guidelines, it is medically appropriate to start screening at a younger age if certain risk factors exist. Ask your doctor to request authorization from your insurance company beforehand to ensure the appropriate details are already documented. This will make the claims process go smoothly once you receive the necessary care.

❓ Are colonoscopies the only screening that my insurance will cover?
No. Colonoscopies are considered the gold standard for detecting polyps. But there are several options seen as medically appropriate that we cover. You can call the number on the back of your insurance card for specifics on what other tests are covered as preventative care in your plan. The frequencies of these tests may differ from a colonoscopy so talk to your doctor about the best option for you.
