The African American Heritage Monument and Park in Kendleton, Texas tells a story through its design.

Daimian Hines, founding principal of Hines Architecture + Design, was the lead architect for the monument and park. Hines grew up understanding what it means for a community's history to go unacknowledged. That understanding shaped every decision he made about this site.

"The primary driver for me was to acknowledge the contributions of African Americans to Fort Bend County," Hines said. "The memorial is designed to reflect fragmentation in the African American diaspora. It is a testament to how our fragmented history is filled in by collective memory."

The result is a site where, as Hines puts it, visitors do not just see history. They feel it. The park is open and welcoming visitors in Kendleton, Texas.
