Scoutmaster Morrison definitely wasn’t a title I’d ever have imagined would be on my bingo card! It’s a role I was honored to hold and one I’m grateful Mrs. Dayal is eager to carry going forward. Scoutmaster Dayal has a great ring to it!
Reflecting on my time with Scouts, I am reminded of how unexpectedly this journey began. When my husband was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, I was thrown feet-first into all things Scouting because he wanted me to take his place with our son’s troop at Summit in West Virginia. Completing the background check, youth protection training, physical, and swim test while facing an uncertain future felt utterly unhinged.
Although I grew up camping, I had never thought to try mountain biking, climbing, white-water rafting, or zip-lining. Engaging in everything the program offered proved to be one of the most challenging and transformative weeks of my life, providing the mental and physical strength our family needed during Brian’s treatment and recovery (it’s almost like Brian’s years of Scouting filled him with the wisdom to know what a gift he was giving me).
Once his health stabilized, the girls and I joined Troop 442. This troop became an extended family for us, filled with food, learning, and much-needed time in nature. It was an honor to serve as Scoutmaster and to work with such inspiring young people. I am so grateful to have been trusted with their stories, art, goals, and ideas about how to build a better world. I have no doubt they will continue helping other people at all times—I will also do my best to continue upholding the Scout Oath.
Thank you for the lovely send-off as Scoutmaster last night during Court of Honor. It meant so much to have been nominated and to receive the Unit Leader Award of Merit! If the tears didn’t give it away, I was also deeply touched by the beautiful compass necklace; it is a thoughtful gift that I will always treasure. Here’s to new adventures! 🧭
📣 Be prepared!
