The catalyst in the formation of the SLHF was the closing of the Imperial Sugar refinery in 2003. The refinery, which had been in continual operation since the mid 1800s, housed a vast historical treasure trove of artifacts, documents, and photographs that traced the evolution of the site from its early days as a working plantation into its more modern era as a company town. an to work together at this time to ensure that the priceless artifacts and the history of the site were preserved. Led by Dennis Parmer, whom had the time was serving on City Council, The City of Sugar Land, the Imperial Sugar Company, and Cherokee Investments developed a partnership approach to the creation of a community-based heritage museum which would collect, preserve, and exhibit the collection on the refinery site. The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in March 2008. The first Board meeting was held in October 2008, and a Strategic Planning session took place in February 2009. The City of Sugar Land has provided the seed funding for the formation of the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation along with generous support from Kempner Fund, Cherokee Investments, Johnson Development, Imperial Sugar, the Fort Bend Museum Association, and community representatives.

🇺🇸 What an incredible Flag Day celebration! Sugar Land Heritage Foundation was honored to host our Nation's 250th Anniversary Celebration at Live Oak Grill yesterday and Sugar Land showed up in the best way.
The afternoon kicked off with a presentation of colors by BSA Troop 1845, a moving performance of the National Anthem by Oma Ikomi, and a beautiful poem read by Hannah L. Singer-songwriter and Sugar Land native Jack Hall kept the energy going all afternoon with an amazing performance, and the Imperial Co****le Tournament brought out some serious competition.

Heritage Highlight: The man who designed Sugar Land’s schools.
The M.R. Wood House is one of the oldest structures still standing in Sugar Land, and it belonged to a man who shaped the town in more ways than one.
Milton R. Wood started as chief chemist at Imperial Sugar and worked his way up to plant superintendent. But his biggest contribution to Sugar Land? The school system.
In 1916, town leaders decided Sugar Land needed better educational facilities. They sent M.R. Wood to California to check out a school that was being called “one of the finest in the nation.” He came back and basically copied the whole thing.
The design had a large central auditorium surrounded by ten individual classroom buildings arranged in a semi-circle. Construction started in 1916 and wrapped up in 1918. Wood designed the auditorium to be Sugar Land’s social hub, with space for silent movies, traveling shows, and dances held on the tiled roof terrace. (A rooftop dance floor? Pretty cool for 1918.)
Wood served as school board president until the early 1940s. While most of the original classroom buildings are gone, the auditorium still stands at Wood and Lakeview, next to the new Lakeview Elementary. It’s been restored with funds from the Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation.
Fort Bend ISD named the M.R. Wood Center for Learning in his honor.

School's out for summer and we have the perfect Saturday plan. Join us this Saturday, June 13 for our monthly Heritage Hike: a 1.5-hour guided walk through Sugar Land's history visiting the historic homes, businesses and landmarks that built our city. A fun and engaging morning for the whole family.

Heritage Highlight: The Imperial Mercantile (Sugar Land's original Amazon Prime)
Back in 1908, the Imperial Mercantile was Sugar Land's commercial hub and literally had everything you needed. Groceries, toys, furniture, clothing, you name it. You could shop in person or call in your order for delivery. (Sound familiar?)
Here's the wild part: you didn't even need cash. Purchases were just deducted from your paycheck if you worked for Imperial Sugar.
When I.H. Kempner and W.T. Eldridge took over the Cunningham sugar mill in 1905, Sugar Land had a bit of an image problem. It was known as the "Hell Hole of the Brazos." (Yes, really.) They set out to turn things around by renovating the town and creating a full company town managed by Imperial Sugar's subsidiary, Sugar Land Industries.
The Mercantile concept worked perfectly when Sugar Land was remote and getting to Houston meant a long, rough drive on terrible roads. Why leave town when everything you needed was right there?
But by the 1950s, better roads and more cars changed everything. People could shop elsewhere. Imperial Sugar needed office space. And post-WWII products flooded the market faster than the old Mercantile could keep up.
In 1952, Sugar Land Industries opened a modern two-story shopping center with offices upstairs and a supermarket, beauty shop, barber, drug store, bank, and post office downstairs. The original Mercantile building became the Farm and Home Center, selling equipment and furniture.
Our 2022 ornament honored this piece of Sugar Land's company town history.

Sugar Land style through the decades.
Our fashion exhibit shows what people actually wore in Sugar Land from the 1920s through the 1950s. Flapper dresses, Depression-era practicality, wartime simplicity, and post-war glamour.
The details are incredible. Hand-sewn buttonholes. Silk stockings. Hats for everything. (Imagine having to coordinate your hat, gloves, and shoes every single day.)
These weren’t costumes or special occasion outfits. This was everyday life in company town Sugar Land, worn by real people living and working here.
Come see the exhibit in person. Museum typically open by appointment.

Heritage Hike is coming up this Saturday!
Old Sugar Land Walking Tour: Explore Sugar Land's history on foot.
Join us for our monthly Historic Walking Tour on Saturday, April 11th at 10:00 a.m. We'll walk through Old Sugar Land, covering about 1.5 miles over 1.5 hours, and share the stories of the buildings, landmarks, and people who built this city.
Tours start at the museum (198 Kempner Street) and are led by knowledgeable guides who bring Sugar Land's company town past to life.

Adults: $10
Youth (ages 12-18): $5
Children under 12: Free
