In the winter of 1777–78, George Washington, 11,000 soldiers, and the approximately 500 women and children who accompanied them endured the brutal conditions of Valley Forge, forging discipline, unity, and the will to win independence. Out of hardship came transformation, the same revolutionary spirit that would soon turn the world upside down.
