Happy birthday to Thomas Worthington, Ohio's sixth governor and one of the fathers of Ohio statehood.

Born in Virginia on July 16, 1773, Thomas and his wife moved to the new town of Chillicothe, Ohio in 1796. There, they emancipated the enslaved people who had traveled along with them. (The Northwest Ordinance of 1789 prohibited slavery.)

They built a lovely, gracious home they called Adena, which is now a museum.

Thomas served in the territorial house of representatives, and became part of what was known as the Chillicothe Junto: a group of Democratic-Republican politicians who worked for Ohio statehood.

Thomas was elected as one of Ohio's first US senators. He was elected governor in 1814, and later served in the Ohio house of representatives.

He died on June 20, 1827. He was first buried at Adena; his grave was later moved to Grandview Cemetery.

There’s no doubt the Founding Fathers approved the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. But which date has the legitimate claim on Independence Day: July 2 or July 4?

We do celebrate our nation’s independence from Great Britain on July 4th, but the actual date of the vote for independence was July 2nd!”…

On this day in history, June 28, 1778, the Battle of Monmouth is the last major battle of the American Revolution in the north. Philadelphia had been occupied in September of 1777, but the entry of France into the war on the American side made the British change their entire strategy. Philadelphia could no longer be safely defended and New York was at risk.”…

Fort Laurens is the only Revolutionary War Fort in Ohio. Visitors can walk the grounds to see the fort’s original outline and visit the museum which pays tribute to the “frontier soldier” through video and artifacts excavated onsite.

"On this day in history, May 24, 1775, John Hancock is elected President of the Continental Congress. John Hancock’s father and grandfather were both ministers and Hancock likely would have become a minister also if his father hadn’t died when he was a boy. Instead, Hancock was raised by his wealthy uncle, Thomas Hancock. Thomas trained John to take over his business, which he did at the age of 27 when Thomas died, making John one of the wealthiest men in the colonies."….
