On Christmas evening Blue vomited, then became inappetent. As this was extremely unusual for Blue, her dad brought her to VEG ER for Pets. The doctor here was able to quickly identify Blue’s problem by performing an ultrasound scan of her abdomen. Blue had 2 distended, fluid-filled uterine horns. This indicated that Blue had a severe uterine infection, also known as a pyometra. A pyometra requires emergency surgery, as the uterus is at risk of rupturing and causing sepsis. Unfortunately, Blue’s dad lives on a very fixed income and surgery at an emergency hospital after hours is easily several thousand dollars. VEG ER for Pets kindly saw Blue and bought her some time by rehydrating her, administering an antiemetic injection and starting her on a course of antibiotics at no charge. Then we stepped in to try and find a doctor/hospital to perform the life-saving surgery that Blue so desperately needed. Dozens of calls later, all resulting in either “no” or a $3000-5000 estimate. (We did however get one $1300 estimate which we will say IS NOT bad for a pyometra surgery, just unfortunately still not in our budget.) By some random chance we happened to call True Vet in Sugar Grove, IL and, expecting the same answer as all the previous hospitals, imagine our surprise when they were up for working with our measly $500 budget! We are so happy to report today that Blue is uterus-free and back home with her dad recovering. Thank you to True Vet and everyone who has ever donated, we could not do things like this without you!
