This 2025/2026 academic year the Suffolk Lions working with the Windsor, Smithfield and other surrounding Lions Clubs, have logged 1910 volunteer man hours to perform vision and hearing screenings on 5665 students in the Isle of Wight, Suffolk and other Zone N schools. Of those screened, 946 students were referred back to their school nurses or health care providers for further evaluation.
1 in 4 school aged children has a vision problem significant enough to impact learning; in economically challenged communities, 1 in 3 school aged children has a vision problem.
80% of what a child learns in a normal classroom setting is through vision.
74% of illiterate adults cannot pass a portion of their vision screening.
70% of juvenile delinquents have an uncorrected vision problem.
Only 15% of children will visit an eye care professional before entering school.
Children with uncorrected visual acuity less than 20/20 are 3 times more likely to fail a grade in school.
The state of Virginia mandates that students in grades pre k, or K, grades 2 or 3, grades 7 and 10 have their vision and hearing screened every year. The responsibility falls onto the school nurses however school boards may enter into contracts with qualified nonprofit vision health organizations for the purpose of conducting these screenings. Those nonprofits still charge the school district to perform the screenings. The Zone N Lions Clubs provide this service to Suffolk, Isle of Wight and surrounding Zone N schools for FREE, saving the school district over $10,000 each year. The Zone N Lions work hard to remove poor vision and hearing as a barrier to a child’s success in the classroom.
Join Lions- We are an active volunteer group improving the lives of others right here in the community. Some people go to bed at night wondering if they make a difference in the world. Lions Club members don’t have that problem. # # #
