What do you use as your decision-making compass?
Purpose – or something else?
Psalm 127:1 tells us, “Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
That word “vain” is worth pausing on.
It doesn’t mean the builders aren’t working hard or that they’re uncommitted.
It means their labor is empty – it lacks the substance that only comes when God is the architect.
Think about the Israelites in the wilderness for a moment.
God gave them manna every single morning – provision that was fresh, sufficient, and perfectly designed for each day.
But when some of them tried to hoard it, to stockpile beyond what God had given for that day, it rotted (Exodus 16:20).
The provision was real, but it was designed to keep them dependent on God’s daily guidance, not on their own ability to accumulate.
There’s a lesson in that for every one of us building an entrepreneurial venture.
Profit matters – your venture needs to be financially viable to fulfill its mission.
But when profit becomes the primary driver, when every decision is filtered through “will this make money?” rather than “does this serve the purpose God gave me?” – that’s when we start building on sand.
Purpose-driven ventures make different decisions than profit-driven ones.
A purpose-driven venture might say no to a lucrative opportunity because it doesn’t align with the mission.
It might grow more slowly because it’s growing in the right direction rather than just growing for the sake of growing.
Profit keeps the lights on, but purpose keeps you going when the lights flicker. And they will flicker.
Here’s what I want you to understand: knowing your purpose isn’t a one-time exercise.
It’s not something you write on a vision board and forget about.
Your purpose should be so clear that it becomes your daily decision-making compass.
When an opportunity presents itself, your purpose tells you whether to say yes or no.
When you’re exhausted and ready to quit, your purpose is the voice that says, “This is bigger than your tiredness.”
