Community Action for Social Justice

Community Action for Social Justice CASJ fosters improved health and quality-of-life for Long Islanders impacted by substance use, incarceration, homelessness, and chronic disease.

At CASJ, we believe that community-based organizations should be community based – that our purpose is to serve the community based on their needs and on their terms, even if we don’t always agree. Our approach is inductive rather than deductive – we must first ascertain what exactly is needed (and how it is needed) rather than forcing our agenda or simply replicating som**hing done successfully e

lsewhere. To do this effectively, we need to listen – listen to our participants and peers, our staff and volunteers, families and other community members, other local organizations, doctors and hospitals, law enforcement and attorneys, local health departments and other planning groups. We operate from a perspective of acceptance first, then work to reduce or eliminate boundaries that separate us from ourselves and from community with one another. All of our services are provided for free, and most are anonymous. The majority of our services are provided through grant funding from the NYS Department of Health. One of our most vital functions is as a bridge between the community and government in order to communicate the needs of Long Islanders, negotiate resources, then collaboratively utilize those resources in the most effective, efficient, and transparent manner possible. We plan the process, not the outcomes. CASJ’s development is and will continue to be directed by the needs of the communities we serve, not on outside agendas or funding availability. We work to maintain adherence to a process of open listening, inclusion, integration, collaboration, and accountability. We are accountable to our funders for contracts we sign, but we are accountable to the community for our existence.

CASJ was notified Saturday morning by the Suffolk County Department of Health that there was a cluster of overdose fatalities in Coram on Friday evening. We mobilized staff to provide overdose prevention training and Narcan via street outreach throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday. We received anecdotal information (matching later reports from the SCPD) that the overdoses were believed to be caused by fentanyl contamination of crack co***ne. This is important for our outreach efforts and public health messaging because people who only use stimulants (co***ne, crack co***ne, crystal m**h) may not otherwise listen or act upon alerts regarding opioid overdoses, and they are likely not to prioritize having Narcan. In these situations, we broaden our scope to engage everyone in the community, and specifically ask that people who are using crack/co***ne test their drugs for fentanyl and ensure they have access to Narcan although they may not have felt they needed it in the past.

We are unaware of additional overdoses on Sunday, but we did receive 7 reports of additional overdose reversals Friday and Saturday (and 911 was not called) using Narcan we had distributed.
CASJ's emergency response will continue through at least Tuesday of this week, with staff onsite in our van today and Tuesday to provide Narcan, harm reduction supplies, and drug checking information.

If you need Narcan or fentanyl test strips please either call us at 866-599-7260 or text us at 631-352-2263
