In case anyone forgot, racial disparities in Policing on LI continue to be a glaring issue 😡🤬 In fact, since 2020, the numbers have gotten even worse

Black people in Nassau and Suffolk were nearly 11 times as likely to experience police force as white people between 2021 and 2024, relative to population, Newsday’s analysis shows. Those figures are nearly double the statewide rate, where police use force against Black people 5.5 times as often as they do against white people.

Thank you, Newsday, for keeping this critical issue in the spotlight.

LI United to Transform Policing & Community Safety continues it's work on Traffic Safety, Police Accountability, and MH Crisis Response. Proud to continue to be a part of this important work

Long Island United to Transform Policing and Public Safety is disheartened, but not surprised, to hear that the DOJ has ended its oversight of the SCPD. We know that racial disparities continue to be rampant, and accountability continues to be deeply lacking. LIUTPCS remains commited to this critical work of police reform and ensuring community safety for ALL Long Islanders. Even though federal oversight has ended, we will continue to advocate and educate on behalf of residents.

It’s not just about “bad apples” it’s about bad systems. What happened in Babylon, where EMS workers berated someone in crisis while police officers, who are supposed to “protect and serve”, stood by and did nothing, is sadly not surprising. The system is built to protect this kind of behavior. Without a bystander’s video, we’d never have known, and nothing would have been done.
In our coalition LI United to Transform Policing & Community Safety, we worked alongside the community to create the People’s Plan, which calls for mental health crises to be handled by trained mental health professionals, not left to those unqualified to respond with care. Yet, time and again, our governments refuse to address the root causes.
Contact your lawmakers and demand a new approach to mental health crises, one that puts care and humanity first.
Transforming Crisis Response
Create A New Crisis Response Model for Long Island that reforms 911 responses to ensure that call-takers can adequately and holistically assess callers in crisis, creates behavioral health co-responder teams composed of clinical professionals, trained peer specialists, and unarmed crisis responders, establishes a tiered response system to match the level and type of risk posed, and includes collection and reporting of comprehensive data on these calls and responses.
But rarely do our governments want to address the root causes of problems. Reach out to your law makers and demand a new way of handling mental health crisis.

The Human Rights Commissions has released its Civilian Police Oversight Annual Report, in it detailing that within a 12-month period SCPD officers failed to activate their body worn cameras a total of 83 times.

“[N]ot using your body camera is obstructing justice, because we have a responsibility to make sure people’s rights are being protected and not being able to make sure that is happening, that means justice can’t be done,” said HRC member Carolyn G. Peabody.

Read the article here: https://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk-police-misconduct-human-rights-report-body-cameras-np9wo6vf =newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=suffolk-news&lctg=279616bc37d490ba049c3cd9da4dda96bb385baf62ef4314a6fcdc59364cb7bf&utm_term=sub

As it currently stands, police have yet to establish clear disciplinary guidelines for officers who fail to activate body cameras. The department has also failed to provide HRC with officers’ complaint history. This reality is unacceptable and our communities deserve procedural means of redress.

📞 CALL NOW: Nassau County Executive’s office — (516) 571‑6600
Tell Bruce Blakeman and staff to
✖ RESCIND the executive order.
✖ REPEAL the full mask ban. No more gagging grassroots protest.

On July 11, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed an executive order allowing federal (including ICE), state, and local law enforcement to wear masks in public during so-called “approved operations.”
Just days earlier, he helped open a new police training village on the Nassau Community College campus—another move that militarizes our police and distances them further away from the communities they are sworn to protect.
These steps are not about safety.
They’re about secrecy and surveillance. Normalizing ICE raids and covert operations in our neighborhoods under the guise of “safety.”

We demand
✖ Rescinding of the executive order. There is no justification for mask-based privilege.
✖ Repeal the full mask ban. No more gagging grassroots protest.
📞 CALL NOW: Nassau County Executive’s office — (516) 571‑6600

I signed an order making it clear: Nassau cops can wear masks to protect themselves and their families during approved operations.

We banned masks for criminals — not for law enforcement. As assaults on officers rise, my administration stands firmly with the brave men and women who keep Nassau the safest county in America.

🚨Two weeks from Today🚨
Executive Order 203 failed to evaluate or review ANY of the proposed reform plans submitted by New York Law Enforcement Agencies. On June 21st we will envision and advocate for community safety that starts with reducing reliance on police in mental health crisis response, increasing transparency as a means for accountability, and reducing unnecessary police encounters. A huge factor often ignored are the policing incentives and models used to determine officers’ promotions. We are proud to host NYCLU as they lead a presentation on “Changing the Culture: How Policing Models and Incentives Define Policing.”
