The cusp of autumn is perfect for outdoor walking. Cooler weather, fewer mosquitoes!

Join the Friends of Woodlands and Waters for a free forest ecology walk led by Neil Pederson, at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. Neil is a researcher associated with Harvard Forest, with interests in old growth forests, dendrochronology, and disturbance ecology. The complex land use history of the Assabet River NWR lends itself well to a discussion of disturbance ecology. Neil will guide us as we read the landscape, understanding how tree and shrub species distributions reveal the history of a forest, and how this is impacted by the moisture regime, and effects of climate change and invasive species. This is a free event.

DATE/TIME: Sunday 10:00am 13 September.

LOCATION: Meet in front of HQ building at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge, 680 Hudson Road, Sudbury.

This will only be postponed in the event of heavy weather. Rain date: Saturday 24 Oct.

Looking for a forest to explore that’s also full of history and interesting architecture? Check out SVT’s Walkup and Robinson Memorial Conservation Area in Westborough.

The remains of the Boston-Worcester trolley line, which opened in 1903 and was abandoned in 1931, bisects the property. This property also features forests, old pasture uplands, an open field with a meadow, and a small pond.

Yesterday SVT joined Suasco River Stewardship Council (RSC) for a paddle on the Concord River. We paddled upstream to SVT's Elliott Preserve Landing, then back downstream to the Two Brothers’ Rocks, Maryknoll Fathers’ causeway, Thoreau’s Fox Island, Mill Brook, and Page’s Brook. We talked about the adjacent land usage, its history, and the geological forces that created this incredible portion of the river. Along the way we saw beaver lodges, a ton of Great Blue Herons, and a Bald Eagle. Then came the rain, so we made our way up Katie Park and had brunch at Riverview Restaurant. Thank you Jonathan, Marlies, and Brian for leading this tour!
