Santiam Canyon Wildfire Relief Fund is concluding the relief fund 4 years after the 2020 fires. From our heart, we are filled with gratitude and thanks to all the supporters of the recovery efforts.

“There are no words that truly capture our gratitude,” states Deana Freres, Co-Founder of SCWRF. “In the early stages, SCWRF assisted residents with short-term housing, rental expenses, and immediate needs such as food, clothing, and prescriptions. As the fund expanded, it supported the rebuilding of structures and homes for residents in the Canyon with extreme generosity and significant donations from all over the country”, Deana Freres further states.

~Storytime Tuesday~

A sweet surprise

Last week, a father and his 3 daughters who live here locally showed up at Disaster Services to make a donation. The oldest daughter, who is 6 years old had decided she wanted to find a way to make some money for someone still recovering from the Wildfire. So she made a cake and sold slices to her neighbors making a grand total of $35. She was so proud and excited to give the money to us and with precise instructions on how she would like it to be spent.

“It has to go to someone who still needs furniture after the fire” she said. She stood so proudly with her little hands holding the cash. She eagerly handed it over with purpose and passion while her twin sisters watched. My heart was so full and I was also reminded how far an act of kindness can go.

“How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it”

-Alana Starr, Disaster Case Manager

2024 is starting out all smiles! With support from the Santiam Canyon Wildfire Relief Fund, the Santiam Disaster Services program was able to replace a very special bunkbed that was lost in the Wildfire. Sweet smiles ringing in the new year in their new home. What an honor standing alongside families in their recovery and helping to make new memories.

A few days ago we received a donation for the Santiam Canyon Relief Fund. This particular donation had a special message that touched our heart. “To help cousin Amelia have a better place to grow up.”

“I want to thank S.I.T. and the Santiam Canyon Wildfire Relief Fund for your diligent and caring assistance. What this vehicle provides to me is incalculable. This vehicle contributes to my rebuilding efforts in the North Santiam Canyon.

As a volunteer on public lands, I can now get to remote locations to evaluate trailheads and trails to prepare for the recovery of fire-impacted areas. I am confident that I can access places that will be indispensable in planning for site tours and projects that will be of real value in participating in the Santiam Recovery Framework. There is more, but my thankfulness is that this type of vehicle is indispensable for my tasks. By extension, this will assist in recovering the area, so Oregonians have more recreational opportunities.”

This survivor lost their home and belongings in our wildfires, but their spirit of community continues as they run a community garden which provides food to their family and several others in the Santiam Canyon. We are glad to have been apart of their recovery and get to know them along the way.

Support our work by heading to scwrf.org to donate, or checking out Santiam Recovery for information on volunteering. Let’s continue to get more families back home!
