Our next stop on the Arkansas Delta Byways is the Blytheville Air Force Base Exhibition.

BAFB was originally known as the Blytheville Army Airfield when it opened in 1942. In 1955 the base was reactivated as Blytheville Air Force Base and played a vital role in national security during The Cold War. This strategic air command base was the #5 U.S. target on the Soviet Union hit list; it was renamed Eaker Air Force Base in 1988 in honor of Lieutenant General Ira C. Eaker, a commander of the Mighty Eighth Air Force during World War II. The base closed in 1992 with the end of The Cold War.

The Blytheville AFB Exhibition is first exhibit of the National Cold War Center (NCWC) and also features other temporary exhibits that tell the story of the air base and its impact its community. The NCWC has plans to display their recent acquisition of 36 pieces of the Berlin Wall allowing their visitors to "experience a physical presence of the wall."

The BAFB Exhibition is open Tuesday-Saturday 9:30am-5pm. It is a definite must see in Arkansas.

Today we celebrate the announcement that marked that official end of legal slavery in our country, and we celebrate the individuals who labored to that end. The dates we have highlighted are just a few of the MANY steps that were taken that resulted in the ratification of the 13th Amendment.
