Archery deer season is right around the corner, and rifle, shotgun, and muzzleloader deer seasons will be here before we know it. Whatever firearm is used, it is very important for the hunter to be confident with their abilities to hit a target accurately. To help ensure that you and your firearm are shooting accurately, Whitetails Unlimited has developed a Sight-In Target Initiative.

The Sight-In Target Initiative was created by Whitetails Unlimited to help ensure hunters and shooting enthusiasts are confident in their ability to shoot their firearm safely and accurately. The initiative consists of a shooting range sight-in kit that includes three 100-yard targets that measure 14 x 16 inches with 1-inch grids and a 6-inch center highlight ring, and a 10 Commandments of Firearm Safety poster. When sighting-in a firearm, follow all safety rules and handle all fi****ms as if they are loaded. Make sure the target has an adequate backstop and remember to wear eye and ear protection.

The Rivers Edge Chapter in Illinois provided a $4,500 WTU grant to the Illini West Trap Team to help support them as they got started with the USA Clay Target League. The team was able to travel to the state competition, thanks to the donated funds, and advanced to nationals in Michigan in July.

See Your Hunt in Whitetails Unlimited Magazine!

Submit your hunting story to the My Story column in Whitetails Unlimited Magazine! Each hunt is unique, memorable, and special to those who were there. Long after the stew and roasts are gone, the memories of that special hunt will remain. You don’t have to be an accomplished writer to submit your story—just write down what happened, keep it to about 500 words, and include a photo or two, your name, and the name of the town and state in which you live.

Plus, if your story is published in an issue of Whitetails Unlimited Magazine, you will receive a WTU hat and 20 oz. tumbler as a thank you for sharing. Note: gifts subject to change with availability.

Whitetails Unlimited, alongside NSSF—The Firearm Industry Trade Association, encourages participation in the shooting sports while promoting firearm safety this National Shooting Sports Month, which will take place throughout August as it celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Coinciding with America 250, this year’s campaign features the theme “Let Freedom Plink” — highlighting freedom and the joy of the shooting sports for enthusiasts of all experience levels.

Whitetail Watch is an anti-poaching initiative created by Whitetails Unlimited to improve hunter/landowner relations and reduce the crime of poaching. To curb this illegal activity, participating landowners will post Whitetail Watch signs on their property. These signs will serve as visible reminders to poachers that citizens are on the watch and suspicious activity will be reported to the wildlife law enforcement.

Whitetail Watch property signs are made from PVC, measuring 11.25 inches on a side, and are white with red and black printing. Decals matching the sign, measuring 3.5 inches on a side, are also available. The signs and decals are suitable for use anywhere in the United States.

The recommended posting distance for Whitetail Watch signs is one sign for every 300 feet of road frontage or four signs per 40 acres.

A $3,000 WTU grant was presented to the Environmental Education Association of Illinois. With the funds, the organization was able to provide conservation and environmental education professional development opportunities to educators in Illinois. Pictured is EEAI Executive Director Brekke Bounds attending the Project WILD conference in Arizona. WTU funds helped offset the cost for her to attend.
