The FCC is taking comments (or will be) on 2 destructive proposals in orbit. One is a stupid idea with mirrors reflecting light to the ground at night, and then there is Elon Musk's plan for 1 million satellites and an orbital AI data center. This orbital clutter will ruin the night skies for everyone on the planet - even the darkest places (like Newport!).
The FCC site is horribly complex and a big pain to navigate. This page does lead step by step how to post a comment on these proposals. There is also a DarkSky International petition to sign (which works quickly).
Give it a try, we can't save the skies without making some noise about it!

For as long as Earth has revolved around the sun, night has been part of life’s rhythm.

Now, a private company is proposing to turn darkness into a commodity—using satellites to reflect sunlight onto Earth at night.

DarkSky opposes Reflect Orbital’s proposal and is calling on our community to speak up. The night sky belongs to everyone.

In 2025, DarkSky’s global astrophotography survey revealed rapidly increasing interference from satellite mega-constellations. This policy paper shares those findings and calls for coordinated action to protect the night sky before we reach a tipping point.

🌕✨ Embrace the Sturgeon Moon! 🌊🐟

Isn't it fascinating that the "Sturgeon Moon" gets its name from the magnificent giant lake sturgeon found in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain? These native freshwater fish were such an important food source for Native Americans during this time of year. While they used to be plentiful in late summer, they're now a rare sight, making any encounter with them even more special!

As dusk falls, we invite you to step away from screens, close the blinds, and turn off lights that obscure the beauty above. Let’s come together to enjoy the natural light of the Sturgeon Moon! 🌌💖
