We had another successful Rewilding event last weekend, which included our amazing team of volunteers and a visit from a wild, slithery friend! 🐍 We encountered a gopher snake, which is pictured with a volunteer who helped move it to a safe location.

Gopher snakes are non-venomous and one of the most common snake species in Los Angeles. They are extremely important for maintaining the health of our local ecosystems, as they help control rodent and pest populations.

We were also graced with the presence of plenty of beautiful blooms, including white sage and orange bush-monkey flower.

In case you're new to our page, our monthly Rewilding events are meant to help protect and restore native plant species in Los Angeles. Volunteers help plant, water, and w**d to give our native plants the best chance at survival.

If you're interested in joining, sign up using the volunteer form on our website.

And finally, a huge THANK YOU to the volunteers who came out last weekend! πŸ’š

We wanted to provide an update on the mountain lion who was found deceased on Mulholland Drive, and could very well be the mountain lion from the CLAW Nature Cam footage.

We heard the following: she was a young female estimated to be just 10 or 11 months old. She was struck by a vehicle in that area and died at the roadside. Since she was not radio-collared or tagged, we do not have any background information on her yet, but UC Davis will conduct genetic testing to determine possible relatives.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: we need more wildlife crossings and corridors. The animals who we share the city with need safer ways to traverse the land they call home.

It's natural to be sad when tragedies like this happen. But we hope that's followed by an urge to make a difference, for the sake of mountain lions like this and all the rest of our wild neighbors.

Looking ahead, we will continue fighting to protect and restore wild land around Los Angeles, and we hope you will too.

A beautiful mountain lion graced the CLAW Nature Cam with its presence, and we are so honored to be able to see this majestic animal in its natural habitat. It does not appear to have a kink in its tail, which is a sign that it is not the product of in-breeding. Seeing an apex predator navigating these local spaces is always awe-inspiring...but this time, it’s hard for us to celebrate.

Heartbreakingly, we believe this may be the very same mountain lion that was found deceased on Mulholland Drive just a few days after this video was taken. πŸ’”

This tragedy underscores two urgent realities for Southern California wildlife:

Securing habitat: The Senderos Canyon land where this cat was filmed is currently up for sale. We are actively supporting efforts to purchase and permanently protect this critical acreage for conservation so wildlife have a safe haven.

Safe passage: Open space isn't enough if animals are trapped within it. Our local big cats desperately need connected habitats. Without dedicated wildlife crossings, crossing major roads, like Mulholland, remains a lethal gamble for them every single day.

We can't change what happened a few days ago, but we can change the future for the next mountain lion that passes through this canyon.

So, how you can help? Support and advocate for the expansion of wildlife crossings across LA. Join our Rewilding events. And continue following us for updates on the Senderos Canyon land sale. Together, we can make LA a safer, wilder place where mountain lions like this one can survive and thrive πŸ’š

Our hillsides are looking a little more like home! This past weekend, CLAW volunteers came out for another successful Rewilding session.

Restoring native habitat protects the plants AND the life they support. From the silvery White Sage that feeds our local carpenter bees to the California Buckwheat that acts as a vital nectar source for all kinds of pollinators, every native species we plant and protect strengthens the entire ecosystem.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us restore this vital slice of Los Angeles! If you're interested in joining our next Rewilding, sign up using the Volunteer form on our website: https://www.clawonline.org/volunteer

Happy Mother's Day! Today, we celebrate all the doe-ting moms in the City of Angels, including our wild neighbors 🦌

Los Angeles mule deer fawns are usually born right around this time of year. These incredible mamas are experts at keeping their little ones hidden in the chaparral until they’re strong enough to keep up.

Thank you to all the moms for your patience, protection, and grace. πŸ’š We hope you have a wonderful day today!

Happy Earth Day! ✨🌎 ✨ Today, and every day, there are countless ways to show up for our planet. Take a hike. Start a garden. Learn the native plants in your neighborhood. Or volunteer alongside people who love nature as much as you do.

Here at CLAW, we believe every day is Earth day, but especially the third Saturday of each month. That's when we hold our monthly Rewilding event, where volunteers come together to restore native plant habitats . It's hands-on, it's meaningful, and it's how we protect the wildlife that calls this city home.

This Earth Day, we hope you find your own way to connect with and honor the earth πŸ’š And we hope to see you at a Rewilding soon!

BLACK BEAR UPDATE: Yesterday, CLAW joined a number of organizations and individuals in urging the California Fish and Game Commission to oppose giving a second bear tag to individual hunters. Unfortunately, the Commission voted unanimously to approve this change. We are disappointed in this decision, but will continue to fight for humane, non-consumptive opportunities for Californians to both experience nature, and protect it.

Looking ahead, there's still lots of work to do to protect our state's wildlife. Here's a snapshot of the bills we're tracking:

βœ… Bills we SUPPORT:
SB 954 – Closes loopholes in environmental review (CEQA) that put wildlife at risk
SB 1135 – Restores & expands the Human-Wildlife Conflict Program
SB 1250 – Makes wildlife connectivity an official goal for Caltrans
AB 2045 – Extends the Habitat Restoration Act permanently

❌ Bills we OPPOSE:
SB 1021 – Creates a youth program centered on hunting wildlife
SB 1097 – Strips a key environmental protection standard from CEQA

One setback doesn't mean we're defeated. It just means we have to fight even harder and be a louder voice for the animals who also call Los Angeles and California home.

CALIFORNIA'S BLACK BEARS NEED YOUR VOICE! 🐻 Currently, a hunter in California can obtain one bear tag that allows them to hunt and kill a bear. This Thursday (4/16), the California Fish and Game Commission will be voting on whether to double that amount to TWO BEARS per hunter.

The research is clear: bear hunting doesn't reduce human-wildlife conflict or boost deer populations. And the majority of Californians oppose it.

Your voice matters. Join the Zoom meeting on April 16 and urge the Commission to vote NO on the Black Bear Hunting Amendments.

Here are the details:
Date: April 16th at 9 a.m.

Or join by phone: +1 (408) 638-0968 or +1 (669) 900-6833

The Black Bear Hunting item is #22 on the FGC Agenda. We hope to hear/see you there!
