We are sharing the results of our 2025/26 Ag BMP Mini-grant, focused on expanding grower use of Composting Best Management Practices. Participating growers gained insights on their compost quality and soil health. They plan to apply what they learned in future seasons' BMP calculations, on-farm composting, and soil testing. UF/IFAS Extension County Agents across South Florida visited the Everglades Soil Testing Laboratory in Belle Glade to bring back current information on the testing services available to local producers and residents. UF soil testing labs in Gainesville and Belle Glade each offer specific testing services. Tests are offered in Gainesville for container nursery media, compost, landscape and vegetable production, and more. The Belle Glade lab offers tests for growers seeking fertilizer recommendations for sugarcane, sweet corn, rice, and vegetables. The Belle Glade lab focuses on organic (muck) soils, but also runs tests for crops being grown in sandy soils. Considering soil testing? The start of the vegetable growing season is a great time to do it! Last month at the Hobe Sound Civic Center, UF/IFAS Extension Martin County offered our third Florida-Friendly Landscaping Certified Professional (FFLCP) Field Module of 2026 with participants representing local nurseries, landscape companies, and some of our Master Gardener Volunteer Yard Advisors. Our thanks to Erin Jenkins of Jenkins Landscaping for offering her yard for the FFL evaluation, and congratulations on her FFL yard recognition! While not everyone taking the field module becomes certified, our representation of certified FFLCPs here in Martin County is now up to 21! County Extension Agents joined UF Specialists at the UF/IFAS Range Cattle Research and Education Center in Ona yesterday to learn about and discuss the pasture mealybug. The pasture mealybug is a new invasive species which affects pasture, turfgrass, sugarcane, corn, and other grasses. County Extension Agents brought questions from their local farmers and ranchers to specialists with UF and the FL Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and we are bringing this information back to share with our communities.
