A screening is only the first step. What matters is where a child goes next.

That’s the work of the Martin County Oral Health Coalition, the collaborative that makes up the Martin County Dental Safety Net. Through its Dental Sealant Program, the Florida Department of Health in Martin County provides dental screenings and sealants to children in Head Start, preschool, kindergarten, and second, third, and fifth grades in schools across the Martin County School District.

When a child needs follow-up care, the program connects the family with the right partner:

Children with Medicaid are referred to Florida Community Health Centers
Uninsured children are referred to Little Lights Dentistry
Children with private dental insurance are directed to their insurance provider to find an in-network dentist

Christian Community Dental Care Center completes the network, providing complete dental care to low-income and Medicaid patients.

Cedrick, from Hobe Sound, first came to Little Lights in 2019, and we’ve been part of his care ever since: fillings, extractions, sealants, fluoride treatments, and regular cleanings, all at no cost to his family.

That kind of steady care is what helps kids in our community grow up healthy and confident, and it’s a big part of what we’re celebrating during our Decade of Smiles.

Our clinic has a new place to sit outside, and the young people who built it delivered it themselves. 💙

Project LIFT is a local nonprofit that offers teens and young adults free counseling, mentoring, and training in trades like carpentry, welding, and auto mechanics. Its students made this picnic table and set of benches for Little Lights Dentistry, painted them the same blue as our building, and set everything up on site.

Now our patients, families, and team have somewhere to sit outside, built by young people from our own community. Thank you to every Project LIFT student and staff member who worked on it.

Happy Toofday! Every October, parents in our community ask us some version of the same question: how much candy is too much? 💙

It turns out that is not quite the right question. What matters more than the size of the pile is how many separate times a day sugar touches teeth, and how long it stays there. A few pieces after dinner is one sugar moment. The same few pieces grazed from a bowl all afternoon is a dozen, and teeth never get the break they need in between.

So no, you do not have to be the parent who confiscates the bucket. Pick a time, let them enjoy it, water afterward, brush before bed.

Welcome to the team, Dulce! 💙

Dulce is joining Little Lights Dentistry as our new Community Outreach Coordinator. She brings more than 10 years of experience in nonprofit work, education, and family services, supporting children and families from many different backgrounds. She also spent 10 years as a volunteer Guardian ad Litem, advocating for children in need.

Dulce is fluent in English and Spanish. She will be building partnerships across our community and helping families connect with the resources they need, including the free dental care Little Lights provides for eligible children.

Our Executive Director, Nicole King, tabled at the YMCA’s Community Baby Shower, an event created to help new moms learn about the services available to their families right here in our community.

For Little Lights, it was a chance to meet parents early. We provide free dental care to uninsured, income-eligible children starting at their first birthday, and the sooner families know we’re here, the sooner their child’s first visit can be a routine checkup instead of an urgent one.

Nicole was in good company with fellow providers who serve the same families, including Frances Rodriguez with Safe Families for Children - Treasure Coast Families of TC. Thank you to the YMCA of The Treasure Coast for bringing these resources together for new moms. 🩵

Our community is full of young people who already know what they want to do. Mary Porter is one of them.

Mary is a student at Clark Advanced Learning Center, and she is currently interning at Little Lights Dentistry. She hopes to become a pediatric dentist, and she is spending time with our clinical team in a clinic that provides free dental care for uninsured, income-eligible children from their first birthday through high school graduation.

It is a good place to see what the work is about. Every child in our chairs is cared for at no cost to their family.

Longer waits for a child with a toothache. Fewer places for families to turn. That is what Amendment 3 could mean on the Treasure Coast, and only registered voters get to decide it. 💙

Florida's voter registration deadline is Monday, October 5. After that, a new registration will not count toward the November 3 ballot.

We know costs are high right now, and a lower tax bill sounds like relief. But the cost does not disappear. It shows up as fewer local services, higher local fees, or both. And when public services shrink, more families turn to clinics like ours at the same moment there is less funding to go around.

Amendment 3 needs 60% to pass, so turnout decides it. Whether you agree with us or not, please make sure you are registered. It takes about two minutes at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov: check your registration, update your address if you have moved, or sign up for the first time. Then send this to one neighbor today.

Vote NO on Amendment 3.
