Polk County Senior Services began in August of 1980 with the opening of the Stromsburg Senior Center. In November of that same year, the Shelby Senior Center offered Senior Services and meals in their respective community. The Polk Senior Center was open to the public in June of 1981. The Osceola Senior Center began providing services to their community in July of 1981. Polk County is unique in that all four towns represented have a senior center located within their respective town. Polk County cares and provides for their seniors!
In August of 2019, the Midwest Covenant Home of Stromsburg was awarded the contract to operate and provide oversight for Polk County Senior Services. They employ, supervise, and support the Program Manager who assists in the day to day operations of Senior Services in Polk County.
Currently, the weekday meals are provided by the Midwest Covenant Home of Stromsburg. All four towns have volunteer drivers who pick up and deliver the meals to each respective senior center. Once the food arrives at the senior center, it is both packaged and delivered to the local home delivered meal participants. The food can also be enjoyed as a congregate meal at each respective senior center. *Currently, due to COVID-19, weekday meals are packaged and delivered from the Midwest Covenant Home directly to the home delivered meal participants since all the senior centers are closed.
During the weekends, the Midwest Covenant Home provides meals for the Stromsburg participants who receive home delivered meals Monday-Friday. The Osceola Good Samaritan provides meals for Osceola participants who receive home delivered meals Monday-Friday. At this time there are not any weekend home delivered meals in the towns of Polk and Shelby.
