Important Information regarding retaining DD214
Additional Information From American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters
Please see the attached document for information regarding DD214 retention from Mark Seavey, The American Legion's national judge advocate. We have gotten a few questions regarding this update:
1. Does this mean that unit secretaries can verify eligibility? No, per our governing documents, eligibility must be verified by the post adjutant/officer
2. What do we do if someone’s eligibility is challenged? The onus would be on the member to provide their eligibility documentation again should their eligibility be challenged.
3. If we are not supposed to hold onto eligibility information, how are we to provide the information to the post adjutant/officer? Units should hold onto eligibility documents only as long as necessary to be reviewed/verified by the post adjutant/officer. Once eligibility has been verified, return the documentation to the new member.
