Our Story
The Housatonic River Clean Up originally began in 1988 with the Trophy Chasers Fishing Club in response to the increase in trash/refuse that could be found along the shores and on the islands in the Housatonic River between the Derby Dam and the mouth of the river in Stratford. Today the organization is known as Housatonic River Clean Up, Inc. The annual clean up, which takes place annually in early spring, brings 200+ volunteers from the community. Together, we attempt to prevent further damage to the environment by pulling potentially dangerous items from the river, its banks, and its islands before it can do more harm. During this time, we also seek to educate as many individuals as possible in order to prevent trash/refuse from entering not just the Housatonic River, but other waterways as well. The 2019 event is currently scheduled to take place on April 27th from 8-2 rain or shine at Birdseye Boat Ramp in Stratford and Sunnyside Boat Ramp in Shelton. We ask that you please dress accordingly. Gloves, trash bags, and buckets will be provided to volunteers as well as lunch and other refreshments. All are welcome to attend! Come by yourself or get a team of friends, family, or co-workers together.
