Most people think of swimming as a summer sport. For a USA Swimming club like VSTP, the year runs on two seasons, back to back.
Here's how it works.
Short course starts in mid-August. Ice Breaker in December is our mid-season championship meet, and the training plan builds toward Phast swims there.
After Ice Breaker, training kicks back up for end-of-season championships. District Championships come first, in February. Age group and senior championships follow.
After a short break, long course picks up. Longer pool, longer races, and the same pattern: Districts first, then age group and senior championships, wrapping up in July.
Then swimmers get a two-week break before the cycle starts again.
Championship meets run prelims and finals. Swimmers race in prelims, and the fastest come back to race again in finals.
Not every championship meet is open to everyone. Districts is open to all our swimmers, and many go hoping to earn qualifying times (QTs).
Those QTs are what get swimmers into age group and senior championships. They take months of steady practice to build.
Coach Ben puts it this way: "Our attitudes in August will determine our attitudes in February."
And not every swimmer is chasing a qualifying time. That's OK too.
Personal bests and smaller goals along the way are a big part of the process, whatever the big goal turns out to be.
Progress looks different for everyone, and a lot of it shows up in skills and confidence before it shows up on the clock.
