Recognize this sound? With warmer weather and plenty of rain in the forecast, spring peepers and many other amphibians are beginning their spring migration to vernal pools to breed🐸 🌧️

Spring peepers are known for their distinctive chorus, as males try to attract a female with their loud and frequent calls that echo across their breeding grounds.

Because amphibians prefer to travel after dark on wet, early spring nights, please drive slowly and watch out for our slow-moving friends! 🚙

Why did the amphibian cross the road?

Join our partners, North Branch Nature Center, for a free, virtual Amphibian Crossing Program - Ecology & Training Night, tonight, March 24th, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Learn why amphibians migrate by the millions from upland forests to wetland breeding grounds each spring, and how you can make a difference helping them cross the road.

Although North Branch Nature Center is in Montpelier, amphibian road crossings occur statewide! Volunteers from all over Vermont venture outside on warm, wet nights in early spring to help amphibians safely reach a vernal pool to breed.

Wildlife don’t recognize town boundaries—but they do feel the impacts of roads, development, and habitat fragmentation.

Waterbury is centrally located within Vermont’s connected forest network, making it a crucial passageway for animals responding to seasonal needs and climate change. Wildlife road crossings in town help maintain these connections safely and effectively.

Join the Waterbury Conservation Commission and Jesse Mohr of Native Geographic LLC for an in-person community presentation!

- Wednesday, March 18, 2026
- 6:30–8:00 PM
- WSF&GC Club House
- No Zoom option

This presentation will highlight wildlife crossings in and around Waterbury, the species that depend on them, and how community planning decisions shape biodiversity conservation at both local and regional scales.

Whether you’re a landowner, commuter, outdoor enthusiast, or simply curious about the landscape we share, this event is for you!

Happy holidays from Stowe Land Trust! ❄️

This week’s features Burnham Farm, one of the last active hill farms in Stowe Hollow when it was conserved in 1995. 🌾 The land was deeply loved by Harry Burnham, who enjoyed poetry and classic literature, lining his cabin walls with Shakespeare.

Burnham Farm spans 107 acres and includes Raven Hill Forest and the White Pine Forest, with beautiful snowy views of Stowe Village, the Green Mountains, and the Worcester Range. Raven Hill Forest is part of the Shutesville Hill Wildlife Corridor, so keep an eye out for wildlife, and fresh tracks in the snow! 🐾❄️

P.S. The lower meadows and open fields are not open to the public, so please make sure to follow the trail along the edge of the field until you enter the forest. Learn more here: https://www.stowelandtrust.org/work/land-protection/conserved/hd-burnham-farm

As the autumn days grow shorter, it’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy stick season! 🍂

While the colorful leaves are gone, forests still have so much to offer, especially Brownsville Forest. Once an active hill farm community through the 1940s, it’s now home to maple, birch, beech, hemlock, and red spruce, and provides incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.
Located within the Worcester Range, one of Vermont’s most wild and least protected mountain ranges, Brownsville Forest is a great place to spot wildlife and take in sweeping views of the Green Mountains from its open meadows. ⛰️🐻🦌

Bare branches also make it easier to ID trees by their bark, twigs, and buds — another reason to love exploring in stick season!🪾
