Stow Conservation Trust

Stow Conservation Trust The Trust was founded in 1977 by a small group of concerned citizens who perceived the significance of the town in relation to its greater environment.

The Stow Conservation Trust (SCT), founded in 1977 and located in Stow, Massachusetts, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, promoting preservation and land conservation. Our purpose is to assist in and promote the preservation and conservation of land in Stow. We feel our membership provides a rich resource for the town in achieving these goals.

This is a good time to pull Garlic Mustard - at your house and your street. You will see the white flower.
If you pull before they make seed, you can just pile them to die. If they have seed, suggest to bag them.
Garlic Mustard is an annual. Plants die in the winter after they flower. They will grow back only from seeds that they drop.
Pull EVERY plant - each plant makes hundreds of seeds.
Seeds can survive for 5 years.
So if you pull EVERY Plant for 5 years, an area will be free.

Treat glass by day, dim lights at night
It is estimated that over 1 billion birds die from collision with glass every year in the United States alone1,2. To protect birds, BirdCast and partners recommend turning lights out from dusk tonight through dawn tomorrow morning, and treating glass around your home or business. See effective and affordable solutions at stopbirdcollisions.org

Thank you for making the skies safer for migratory birds!

Do you know our name? Look carefully if you see tiny black dots on the snow. Do they move? These tiny crustaceans (nope, they’re not insects..) are important decomposers in the woods. They have a natural anti-freeze to survive the cold and can eat microscopic bacteria and molds on the surface of the snow. And…they won’t bite you or climb onto your dog…If you know what they are, add it to the comment section..
Answer will be posted next week.

A great property to look for birds. The Shephard Woodlands have much to offer our feathered friends. In the spring great blue herons can be seen roosting in some of the dead trees along the beaver pond.

Scaredy cat, or maybe hungry cat. Whatever it may be, glad it has found a place in Stow within our conservation lands for its home. What other creatures do you see when you are out walking the trails?
