Part 2 of Melissa’s story is about what happened after their first hard decision.

Like many of us, her family’s needs did not stop changing. Her dad became ill and needed care to recover. Her mom was living with dementia. And then, after her dad passed away, Melissa had to make another care decision for her mother while she was hurting and trying to hold everything together.

But once again, Joanna with Assisted Living Navigators, LLC was there.

➡️ She helped Melissa understand what to look for in a care home, what questions to ask, and how to bring concerns to the right people when something needed attention.

Melissa shared that she has no regrets about the choices she made for her dad in his time of need. Her mom is 90 years old and still receiving great care today.

Her story reminds us how important steady guidance, honest education, and real advocacy can be when helping with the needs of an aging parent.

💙 If your family is navigating dementia care, researching assisted living options in Northeast Ohio, or need help understanding the changing needs of an aging loved one, call, email, or DM us.

We’ll chat about what you're seeing and provide guidance on where to go next. Your contact info stays private and as always, our services are free to you.

One of the hardest parts of caring for an aging parent is knowing when more help is needed.

Melissa shared that her parents were not ready to give up independence, and as their daughter, she did not want to feel like she was taking that away from them.

That is a real concern for so many families. But there is hope.

➡️ Senior living guidance can help families understand care options, talk through safety needs, and think about what daily support would actually look like.

For Melissa’s family, it also meant helping her dad understand that a care home could support her mom’s needs so he could keep loving her as her husband, not carrying the full weight of her care day to day.

Stay tuned to hear the rest of what Melissa shares in part 2 of this video later this week.

So many families tell us, “I promised Dad I would never put him in a nursing home.”

We understand why that fear comes up. For many people, “senior living” gets grouped into one big category, and that can make the decision feel heavier than it needs to be.

➡️ But needing help does not always mean nursing home care.

Sometimes the right fit is independent living, assisted living, memory care, or nursing home care. The best choice depends on your loved one’s care needs, safety, memory concerns, mobility, budget, location, and what daily life looks like right now.

That is where guidance matters ✨

Joanna has worked as a Licensed Social Worker for over 30 years, with a focus in Hospice and Home Health, specifically with dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. Through Assisted Living Navigators, she helps families sort through the options with care and clarity.

As a local, independent advocate, Joanna helps families compare communities, understand next steps, and navigate the transition with support that is always free to the family.

This includes touring communities, connecting with trusted resources, coordinating with movers or downsizers, exploring Veteran’s Services when applicable, and helping families feel less overwhelmed by the process.

The goal is not to take something away. It is to find the place where your loved one can be safe, supported, and able to thrive.

💙 If you're planning ahead for a parent or loved one, call, email, or send us a DM to talk through care needs, timing, and next steps.

Did you know? Assisted living is only one level of care.

➡️ Your loved one may need independent living, assisted living, memory care, or nursing care depending on what is happening at home.

A few questions can help narrow it down:

Do they need help with bathing, dressing, meals, or medications?

Are they safe home alone?

Are there memory changes, falls, wandering, or confusion?

Do they need medical care that requires skilled nursing support?

At Assisted Living Navigators, we help families sort through these questions in a calm, practical way. Our service is always free, and your contact information stays private so you are not overwhelmed by call centers or sales calls.

💙 If you're searching for senior living options and don’t know where to begin, call, email, or send me a DM. I’ll walk you through it step by step.

Families often search, “What’s the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?” when they are first trying to understand care options.

➡️ Here is the simplest way to think about it:

Assisted living is usually for someone who needs help with daily needs, such as meals, medication reminders, bathing, dressing, transportation, or safety.

A nursing home is for someone who needs more medical care, skilled nursing, or ongoing support that goes beyond what assisted living can safely provide.

The right fit depends on your loved one’s health, safety, mobility, memory, and everyday needs.

✨ As a social worker owned placement service, ALN helps families understand what assisted living means, what nursing home care means, and which option may fit best.

Our guidance is always free, social worker owned, and your contact information is kept private so you're not overwhelmed by sales calls.

If you're searching for senior living options and don’t know where to start, follow for guidance that makes it easier, or reach out for a conversation today 💙

For many families, the words “assisted living” bring up worry.

You may picture an old nursing home. You may wonder if your loved one will lose independence. You may feel unsure about when to start asking questions.

Assisted living today is often very different from what families remember from 20 years ago.

Many assisted living facilities are designed to offer help with daily needs, meals, activities, safety, and connection. The goal is to support your loved one while helping them keep as much independence as possible.

As a social worker owned placement service, ALN helps families understand the difference before they start calling communities. We also keep your contact information private, so you are not sent to call centers or overwhelmed by sales calls.

💙 Not sure where your loved one fits? Call, email, or DM us. We’ll help you take the next step.

How do you know if an assisted living community is right for your aging parent?

It is not just about how it looks. Pay attention to:

How staff interact with residents
How quickly care needs are met
Whether residents seem engaged and supported
The overall feeling when you walk through

Because assisted living today is not just about care. It is about quality of life, connection, and feeling at home.

If you're exploring assisted living in Summit County or nearby areas, I can help you understand what to look for so you can make the right decisions about caring for your loved one 💙

Trust that instinct.

It usually means you’re noticing small changes- and it's smart to find help before they become bigger ones.

💙 If you're seeing subtle changes or worried about a fall, call, email, or send me a DM. We can figure out what comes next, together.

Do assisted living communities allow pets?

In many cases, yes, they do.

This is one of the first questions families ask when they start caring for an aging parent.

And usually, it’s not just about the pet.

It’s about everything that pet represents
Routine
Comfort
Familiarity
A sense of home

A lot of families worry their mom will have to give all of that up in order to get the care she needs.

➡️ But assisted living today is very different from what many people expect.

Many communities are designed around independence and quality of life. Residents often have their own space, can come and go, enjoy meals and activities, and stay connected to the routines that matter most. In many cases, that includes pets and personal belongings.

Support is there when it’s needed, not taken over completely.

The most important part is knowing how to choose the right community. Not every option offers the same level of care, attention, or environment.

I personally help families sort through what can feel like overwhelming options, without relying on Google searches or getting flooded with calls from national sites.

If you're looking at assisted living in Akron or Cuyahoga Falls and trying to understand what’s best for your mom, I’m here to help you think it through step by step.
