Heat stress doesn’t end when Heat Safety Awareness Week does.

As temperatures continue to rise, occupational heat stress remains a growing challenge across industries—impacting worker health, safety, and productivity. Yet many workplaces lack consistent, evidence-based heat safety protocols and trained medical oversight.

Athletic trainers are uniquely positioned to help fill that gap.

From prevention and emergency response to recovery and return-to-work considerations, athletic trainers bring specialized expertise that can help employers better protect their workforce in real-world environments.

In collaboration with the and , the Korey Stringer Institute contributed to newly published best practice recommendations focused on occupational heat stress management and the role of the athletic trainer in worker safety.

This post is the start of a new series where we’ll break these recommendations down into practical, easy-to-understand takeaways:

• Why heat safety matters
• The athletic trainer’s role in prevention
• Recognition and treatment strategies
• Return-to-work considerations
• What this means for employers

Because heat safety awareness should extend far beyond just one week.

The Perry Weather Heat Lab at UNF’s KSI will serve as a hub for thermoregulation research and human performance testing 🌡️

From athletes to occupational workers to military personnel (any everyone in between!), we are excited to support populations exposed to heat stress here in Jacksonville and beyond! DUUUVAL!

The lab will also offer basic fitness and wellness testing available to the general population. Using tools ranging from metabolic and body composition testing to heat tolerance testing protocols, Dr. Szymanski and .gbrew aim to better understand human performance, hydration, recovery, safety, and resilience in challenging environments.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to grow this work alongside UNF students, collaborators, and community partners. Thanks to for supporting this space! 🔥

Founded by Kelci Stringer to honor Korey’s legacy, KSI has always focused on bringing science into practice. As of Monday, our roots officially spread down the east coast. 🦪🌊🌴

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this vision a reality and to all who joined us to celebrate the beginning of this next chapter for KSI at UNF.

Jacksonville, we’re proud to call you home. DUUUVAL!

Highlights from an unforgettable milestone yesterday, celebrating the grand opening of our first satellite location at the University of North Florida! 🔥🌴

The Perry Weather Heat Lab at UNF’s KSI was built with a shared mission: advancing heat safety research, education, and implementation, founded in memory of Korey Stringer, who died from exertional heat stroke 25 years ago this summer.

Through this work, we remain committed to turning tragedy into action and improving health and safety for athletes, workers, military personnel, and other physically active populations.

The next chapter of KSI starts here.

If you’re in the Jacksonville area, come say hi!

We’re proud to recognize several members of the Korey Stringer Institute family as they graduate and begin their next chapter. 🎓

We are so proud of all they have accomplished and grateful for the passion, hard work, and dedication they’ve brought to our mission and team. Their impact on KSI and the communities we serve has been meaningful, and we cannot wait to see all they accomplish next.

Congratulations, graduates — and remember, once KSI family, always KSI family. 💙

💧 What’s actually in your sweat?

At KSI, sweat testing helps active individuals move beyond guesswork and build a hydration plan based on their own physiology. During testing, we measure how much fluid and electrolytes you lose during exercise or work in the heat — including sodium, potassium, and chloride. 🧪

Why does it matter? Knowing your sweat losses can help support hydration, performance, safety, and comfort in hot environments. 🌡️

Because no two people sweat the same.

A weekend in Los Angeles focused on what matters most: learning, teaching, and advancing athlete safety.

Our team was proud to contribute to the Emergency Care in Sport course at the Los Angeles Rams Practice Facility—while also investing in the continued educaion of our own staff.

From leading sessions on exertional heat stroke and policy implementation to hands-on emergency care training, this experience reinforced a core belief at KSI: learning never stops.

Grateful to connect with partners like Defibtech along the way.

Celebrating a semester of hard work culminating in capstone presentations last week 👏

Under the leadership of Rob Huggins, students spent the semester collaborating with mentors to develop research projects ranging from original studies to in-depth literature reviews.

We’re especially proud of the students who worked alongside KSI staff to explore critical topics like heat safety in occupational settings, hydration challenges, and emergency action planning in secondary school athletics.

At KSI, advancing science goes hand in hand with preparing the next generation of researchers and clinicians—and this group represents a bright future.

Today, we mark 16 years of the Korey Stringer Institute.

What began as a vision has grown into a movement—one committed to preventing sudden death and improving safety for all individuals who are active in the heat, from athletes to laborers to warfighters. We are proud of the impact we’ve made, but equally aware that there is still more work to be done.

We are deeply grateful to our founding partners—the NFL, Gatorade, and the University of Connecticut—for believing in this mission from the very beginning. We also extend our sincere thanks to all our corporate partners whose continued support has allowed us to expand our reach and advance this critical work.

To every member of the KSI team, past and present: your dedication, expertise, and passion are the foundation of everything we do.

We continue to be inspired by our founder, Kelci, whose vision continues to guide our work every day. And today, we honor Korey—his legacy, his spirit, and the purpose that drives us forward.

16 years later, our commitment remains the same: to protect those who live, work, and compete in the heat—and to ensure that no life is lost to preventable causes.

Celebrating teamwork, tradition, and the power of athletic trainers at the 130th running of the Boston Marathon 🏃‍♂️💙

From the Dartmouth medical tent to the finish line, our team was proud to be part of the care network supporting thousands of runners.

👟 John Jardine, MD, and athletic trainer Dave Csillan were stationed in the heat deck, providing critical care for exertional heat stroke and other heat illnesses.
👟 Athletic trainers Christianne Eason and Diane Sartanowicz were at the finish line, ready to care for athletes as they crossed.

This work builds on a powerful legacy. For decades, KSI has been honored to support medical care at the Boston Marathon—alongside leaders like Chris Troyanos, whose leadership since 1977 helped grow one of the largest athletic training volunteer efforts in the country.

To the 100+ athletic trainers and students who showed up to provide care: this is what you do best.

To every runner: congratulations on an incredible achievement.
