A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated Master Gardener Volunteers who spent the day working in our Master Gardener Volunteer Demonstration Garden! Their hard work, passion, and commitment are helping transform this space into a thriving garden that will produce fresh vegetables for local food donation efforts throughout the growing season.

We are also grateful to Lowe's for their generous grant support, which provided the materials and supplies needed to bring this project to life. Through the power of volunteers, community partnerships, and a shared commitment to giving back, we are cultivating more than a garden—we are growing a resource that will benefit the Rockland community for years to come.

We’re proud to share that CCE Rockland’s own Jen Zunino-Smith and Anna Hickey were featured on News 12 discussing harmful algal blooms and the role phosphorus pollution plays in water quality.

While many people enjoy Rockland’s lakes and waterways throughout the summer, protecting these valuable resources requires year-round awareness. Jen highlighted how everyday activities—such as grass clippings, fertilizer use, and car washing—can contribute to phosphorus runoff that eventually reaches our waterways through storm drains.

Anna shared a simple tip for homeowners and gardeners: when purchasing fertilizer, look for a “0” as the middle number in the fertilizer analysis (for example, 20-0-10). The middle number represents phosphorus, and choosing products with a zero helps reduce excess phosphorus entering local lakes, streams, and reservoirs.

Thank you to Jen and Anna for helping educate our community about the simple actions we can all take to protect local water quality and reduce the risk of harmful algal blooms.

Building the next generation of environmental stewards!

Jen Zunino-Smith and Anna Hickey, from CCE’s Environmental & Stormwater Compliance team, recently led a comprehensive stormwater training session for 26 incoming Rockland County Conservation Service Corps interns. The interns gained hands-on experience in stormwater education, inspection, and mapping—including how to log and inspect stormwater outfalls using ArcGIS and take precise pipe measurements in catch basins to determine flow direction. Eight of these interns will be placed directly into local towns and villages, where they will put their new skills to work helping municipalities meet their NYS MS4 stormwater permit requirements.
