Science & History Talk on the Ashley Schiff Preserve with Sharon Pochron
Monday, September 26, 4-5pm
Hosted at the Zuccaire Gallery
Presentation by Sharon Pochron, Associate Professor of Practice at Stony Brook University and the President of the Friends of Ashley Schiff Preserve. The Ashley Schiff Preserve is 26.6 acres of natural land on Stony Brook University’s campus. Located near Roth Quad and South Campus, the preserve is a place for visitors to walk, bike, run, and relax in the forest. It is home to 75 plant species including American Chestnuts. It has also been used as a teaching tool for professors across disciplines for over 50 years.

We wish to thank our past Alumni Representative, Social Media Manager, and Volunteer Program Manager : Hogyeum ‘Evan’ Hogyeum Evan Joo who is leaving us to pursue his advanced degree. He created a student volunteer program and mentored more than 36 undergraduate students. He made over 490 posts on Instagram and led the 3rd most popular Instagram account in SBU Community. He redesigned our website, presented several posters to URECA, and collaborated with out numerous student organizations. We wish him the best of luck!

We had a group of curious students from Roslyn High School who are studying the lichen diversity of Long Island
(Lead by Ms. Lisa Daniel’s, biology/AP Environmental Science). They are working with the DNALC and the Barcode Long Island Project. With our permission, they visited our Preserve and collected lichen samples! Hope to learn more about what you guys have found and what we have in our Preserve!

Earth Month is now in full swing, here are some environmental-themed events and GBMs to look out for this week!

Starting out tonight with a zoom panel on the global plastics crisis and environmental justice sponsored by Africana Studies, the Safina Center, and HISB. Sign up link in our bio.

Next on Wednesday with some eco-friendly GBMs by the International Student Organization at 4 pm with a pot painting night, Foraging and Mycology Society at 5 pm with a craft night, and Environmental Club at 8 pm with a paint night!

On Thursday CentriSeed is hosting an Alumni Panel at 7 pm. Come see what former members are up to now and what cool things you can achieve post-graduation! Marine Science Club is hosting a talk with FishGuyPhotos aka Chris Paparo about sharks at 8 pm. Come learn about sharks specifically local to Long Island! 

To end the week join the Young Investigators Review and the Friends of the Ashley Schiff Preserve for a guided preserve hike and painting session Friday at 1 pm.
