Sri Lanka Medical Association of North America [SLMANA] is celebrating 16 years of charitable service. SLMANA is a volunteer organization, we are not-for profit, apolitical and tax exempt. Our goal is to provide health related humanitarian and charitable services in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Medical Association of North America - East was formed in 2003 under the parent org

anization, SLMANA Inc. In 2009, projects in the United States were added to our mission. These include free health education, free health screenings and participation in IRB approved research. SLMANA’s primary objectives are to fund and equip hospitals and other institutions that care for the sick and needy in Sri Lanka. We also provide assistance at times of natural disasters with relief medical teams, promote medical research among members and enhance the health and well being through health education and health screenings. In addition, we strive to advance the education of healthcare professionals in Sri Lanka with grants and scholarships and provide books to libraries and equipment to clinical facilities. We achieved our objectives for 2011. Two community outreach programs were conducted. A new interactive website was launched. The bylaws were amended, updated and approved at the annual general meeting in November. The fund allocation committee updated strategies for fund distribution. More young members were recruited. The year ended with our biennial fund raiser. This included an informative continuing medical education session, a successful silent auction followed by a fantastic charity ball. In 2012, we will channel our energies towards the distribution of funds for health related humanitarian and charitable projects in Sri Lanka. Our commitment towards community outreach programs will continue. For the first time, a golf outing will be held on May 30th in Connecticut. In August, we will showcase local Sri Lankan talent. In the first week of December the annual general meeting will be held followed by a holiday “fundraiser” party, which will conclude my presidency and welcome the new president and the executive committee.
