Long Island Bulldog Rescue

Long Island Bulldog Rescue Helping, Healing, and Homing English Bulldogs throughout the Northeast. We commit to each English Bulldog and adopter(s) we serve for the life of the dog.

The mission of Long Island Bulldog Rescue (LIBR) is to provide education, prevention, intervention, and adoption services to ensure that all English Bulldogs enjoy long, healthy lives in loving, safe, appropriate homes where they are provided the life-long care they require. In the event that an adoption is unsuccessful, the dog is to be returned to the LIBR. We fulfill our mission by providing:

Humane education for school-age youth, so children learn the principle, practices and procedures involved in adding to the family by buying or adopting an English Bulldog
Breed-specific best practices education the general public can use to understand the characteristics of English Bulldogs and make informed decisions about purchasing, adopting, or releasing a puppy or dog for adoption. Breed-specific education to prevent tragic outcomes of the vicious cycle of irresponsible breeding, sale and purchase of puppies and dogs, leading to neglect, abandonment, abuse, and death of English Bulldogs. The spectrum of services involved in rescuing English Bulldogs, including but not limited to:
a) Networking with national and regional breed rescues, as well as shelters, advocacy organizations, and English Bulldog Clubs;
b) Conducting intake services to process and receive English Bulldogs that have been abused, abandoned at shelters, or released for adoption by owners who are unable to keep them;
c) Screening all prospective adopters to create an optimal match between prospective adopters and dogs available for adoption. d) Offering transitional guidance and support for owners forced to release dogs for adoption due to family crisis;
e) Offering transitional support to families receiving English Bulldogs that have been abused, neglected, abandoned, or released for adoption;
f) Collaborating with veterinarians and other medical practitioners to provide screening, spay, neuter, vaccinate, and other medical attention, such as surgery and medication;
g) Homing special needs English Bulldog puppies and dogs;
h) Providing foster care for English Bulldogs seeking permanent homes;
Raising funds to support the above activities.

We are heartbroken to share that overnight our dear Benji gained his wings. We were prepared to fight for him for as long as he was able but his little body could not handle anymore. He was doing well and getting stronger after being released from the hospital last week, but went downhill yesterday morning. We are so grateful for the team at Guardian Veterinary Specialists and to Benji's incredible foster Erin O'Connell Hoffman and her family who showed him a beautiful life full of love in his final days. Thank you to everyone who loved and supported Benji through donations and prayers. We could not have given him a chance without you. We wish we had gotten him sooner and that things had turned out differently but in the end he was surrounded by love and is now at peace💔.

A reminder to check your lawn and garden beds for mushrooms after all of the rain this past weekend, especially if you're using mulch/sweet peet. We almost lost Dumpling last fall to mushroom toxicity, the bill to save her life was $13k. She spent 7 days in the hospital on antibiotics and fluids. The mushroom she consumed is not known to be toxic to dogs and yet it nearly killed her. We are on an acre and a half, I'm finding them in the lawn and in the sweet peet. Pulled about 40 on Monday morning and another 60+ today. Most were behind a row of green giants that were planted under a large oak (location western CT). Just another reason why pet insurance is so important! 🍄‍🟫 🚫

Benji's recovery has taken a turn and he is headed back to the hospital this morning. We are heartbroken for him and his foster who has taken such wonderful care of him. He is lethargic and does not want to eat. Please keep him in your heart and consider a donation if you haven't already. His medical bill has surpassed $20,000 and is only going up. 💔🙏🏼

Benji is scheduled to leave the hospital tomorrow. He will need a quiet place to recover where someone is home, I am not comfortable with him being alone 8 hours a day for now. Right now he is extremely underweight and his appearance is very shocking/upsetting but his numbers are improving and he will heal faster out of the hospital. He is very loving and sweet, he loves to suckle on stuffies and be held. He will be on a high caloric hydrolyzed protein diet for now. I also think fresh air would be wonderful for him so a fenced in yard would be ideal. Benji will need to be neutered once he has fully recovered.
