🪵🌿 Young Naturalists and Fellow Nature Lovers,

Our final Creature Feature of 2025 shines a spotlight on the Great Horned Owl!

A Great Horned Owl’s eyes are enormous, so large, in fact, that they make up about 3% of the bird’s total body weight. Their eyes contain far more rods than cones, giving them exceptional night vision. Because owl eyes are tube-shaped and can’t move within their sockets, they swivel their heads instead while still maintaining impressive depth perception.

Their distinctive facial discs help funnel sound directly to their ears, making them incredible hunters. Around this time of year, you may even hear males and females duetting at dusk as part of their courtship rituals.

Keep your eyes (and ears) open - you never know who might be watching from above! 🦉
