The Spellman High Voltage Electronics Laboratory and Advanced Combustion and Energy Systems Laboratory, led by Fang Luo, PhD and Dimitris Assanis, PhD, respectively, are working to develop a more efficient power grid.

While researchers tackle the challenges of the grid, Derek O'Connor, Manager of Workforce Development, is leading a series of workforce development initiatives and programs to prepare students to become the next generation of engineers.

From converter modules and ultrafast switching devices, advanced fuels and hardware, and hands-on training programs, Stony Brook University is ready to create the power grid of tomorrow.

A modern, efficient power grid is crucial for national security and the economy, but the challenges are greater than ever. Researchers are working to make energy infrastructure fit for the future.

Employing over 1,000 workers across five states is just one of the many impressive metrics featured on Long Island Power Authority's most recent South Fork Wind Farm fact sheet.

Developed by Ørsted and completed in March 2024, the offshore wind farm has provided power to 70,000 homes and achieved a winter capacity factor of 56%, consistent with other base load generation sources.

On Wednesday, October 9, three Stony Brook University students had the opportunity to see the Ørsted South Fork Wind Farm off the coast of Long Island.

Shiue Deng, Abdul Muneeb, and Yuxuan Wu, graduate students of Fang Luo, PhD, sailed 35 miles for a tour of the offshore wind farm. The tour, provided by Ørsted, was especially exciting for our students, as their studies are directly related to offshore wind power systems, cables, and transmission equipment.

Thank you Ørsted for allowing our students to be hands-on in this exciting opportunity.

Last week, AERTC and The New York Climate Exchange held a joint event on Governors Island during NYC Climate Week.

The event kicked off with opening remarks from Robert B. Catell, AERTC Board Chairman, Stephen Hammer, PhD, Founding CEO of the New York Climate Exchange, and Richard McCormick, PhD, Interim President of Stony Brook University. Opening remarks were followed by presentations from Kathleen Schmid, NYC Mayor's Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, Carter Strickland, SUNY - The State University of New York, and Andrew J. Coleman, PhD, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), where the experts addressed the challenges and solutions to New York City's energy transition efforts.

The event concluded with a panel of experts, moderated by Andrew Coleman, PhD, answering questions that were submitted during roundtable discussions earlier in the day. The panel included Eva Gardow, EPRI and New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium, Huck Montgomery, National Grid, Michael Richter, Brightcore Energy, and Jane Shin, Con Edison.

As a member of the anchor institute for the new Climate Solutions Center on Governors Island, we are honored to have hosted such an important event that will inspire climate solutions and we thank everyone who participated and made this event possible.

The AERTC held its first cohort session of the Offshore Wind Training Institute in the new HVDC training lab last week.

Sponsored by the Offshore Wind Training Institute and jointly led by Dr. Fang Luo, Director of the Spellman High Voltage Power Electronics Lab, and Derek O'Connor, Workforce Development Manager at SBU Economic Development, the cohort brought together 20 students from Suffolk County Community College interested in the growing offshore wind field. The lab is fully equipped with three state-of-the-art power electronics and electrical power training stations that provide hands-on experiments and education.

The next cohort session will be held this Friday, September 20, in the AERTC building.
