It almost didn’t happen, but at the final hour we had beautiful weather, willing volunteers and happy oysters and clams. Thankful for the teachers John Thiele and Danielle Davey and their students, Kayla Serina and her students and of course — this team comes through every time. It’s fun, but exhausting, dirty but rewarding and most of all, just our tiny bit to repopulate our waters with bivalves, maintaining the biodiversity of this beautiful area. This program is supported by our home club, the Stony Brook Yacht Club, and , who is always looking out for our environment and community.

Running the SBYC Mariculture Program with Chris Magidson (3% 🤣) is difficult at times but totally worth it. I’m a fan of life-long learning, and I am always learning with this project. This past Saturday, The Shellfish Gang got back together with so many helping hands. Thank you, Kayla Serina for bringing your Avalon team of students, caring for the babies and collecting data the whole season, Annie Healy, Dr. Jeffrey Levington and his wife Joan, Rob and Mike from SBYC, John Thiele and his SBS AP Environmental students, the Mellerts, and BobbyLove. Rainy and cold, the job got done and our reward— a beautiful rainbow came out!

Fun time for the Mariculture Program at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner for SBYC volunteers. Grateful for the volunteers that are always there for the shellfish when it’s time to haul crates or load bags….missing are Bob, Neal, Kayla, Christine and Janel and all the young people that lend their curiosity and their muscles.

A great day with a great team! 30,000-1 year old clams were placed in the nursery at the Stony Brook Yacht Club this morning. We had great weather and a great team—Bruce, Annie, Kayla and her Avalon group, Robert, Neal and the hard-working Team Mellert and Bob for crates and ' 🤣 We had a couple of obstacles to overcome with missing supplies, but the big brains worked the problem and we repurposed items—Annie’s recyclable Walmart bags— and it all came together. An additional thank you to Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich for supporting the SBYC Mariculture program!!
And now we wait for them to grow!!
