📣 🎉It’s GO time: Fill the Funds is officially underway!

📅Today, May 2nd, we invite you to join our annual fundraiser and help us Fill the Funds. As we near the end of the school year, many of our FAST Funds have expended all of their grant dollars, and we want to ensure that we are able to refill their coffers to support more students in need as we head into summer.

🎓This work is urgent, and it’s important to understand the moment we’re in. In our latest blog post, Traci reflects on how today’s national conversations around higher education often miss the reality most students and educators are living—and why the work of FAST Fund leaders across the country is so essential. Our FAST Fund, together with United University Professions, is fundraising to help students reach the finish line–graduation. 🎓Our dedicated volunteers work directly with students and ‘make the hand-off’ 😉🏃 quick and hassle-free, so students can stay focused on what’s important.

🗣️One student said about the FAST Fund, “Pursuing my education has been one of the most important decisions I’ve ever made. It’s not just about earning a degree but also about building a brighter future for my family. This journey hasn’t always been easy, but your generous support has made all the difference.”

👩‍🎓 A Believe in Students study found that more than 92% of students who received an emergency grant of just $250 were able to persist towards their degrees, compared to 66% of all students at that school. Sometimes even less than that is the difference
between a student continuing their education or leaving school with debt and no degree.

📚 When a student’s grades start to drop, it’s easy to assume they’re slacking off.
But what if the truth is much harder—and more heartbreaking?

👉 They can’t afford the online access code for homework.
👉 They skipped class because there was no gas in the car.
👉 They’re juggling school, work, caregiving, and more.

The FAST Fund at Stony Brook University is part of the Believe in Students network. We provide **emergency financial support** to students facing unexpected hardships—so they don’t have to choose between surviving and succeeding.

These students are:
🧑‍🔬 First-generation college students
👩‍👧‍👦 Single parents
🪖 Veterans returning to civilian life
🚍 Commuters traveling hours to campus
🎓 Future doctors, engineers, teachers, and leaders

Sometimes, all it takes is a textbook, a train ticket, or a tank of gas to keep someone on their path to graduation.

More than $3,600 was raised tonight by faculty/staff and students together at our 3rd annual gift basket fundraiser. Highlights include: a visit from Wolfie, a lot of talk about underwear, and an eye-opening story shared by a FAST Fund recipient. Huge thanks to all who made this possible!

Thank you to the members of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society for including the us in "Pi a Professor". Together with Electrical Engineering Instructional Support Specialist, Jenny Chan, the Omicron Chapter raised $186 in donations for the FAST Fund!
