We welcomed MaryAnn Martinez (back wearing the scarf) from the New London Community Meal Center at our weekly Friday morning meeting! She spoke about the history, founded in 1985 and how the community can help the meal center with donations. Our rotary members volunteer at the New London location every month!

Our speakers this morning at our rotary meeting was Ann Marie Hall and her team of young students who made it to the CT finals of their age group and qualified for the Lego Robotics national competition. The kids provided a short robotics demonstration on an ocean exploration robot and project they created and are going on to compete in the international robotics competition in Houston in the spring!

Our rotary donated $5,000 as a sponsor to help defray the costs of the trip. We were happy to help this worthy cause and wish the Lego Robotics team a win at the competition!

URGENT: ALL HANDS ON DECK
Support Needed for Hurricane Helene Victims
Ashville, North Carolina, District 7670
A Rotary Southern Connecticut Relief Effort

Hurricane Helene caused significant damage in Asheville, North Carolina and throughout Western North Carolina, (Rotary District 7670), leaving many in urgent need of assistance. Rotary Southern Connecticut is organizing a massive relief effort specifically for Asheville, and we're reaching out to all Southern Connecticut Club Presidents for support.

Important Update: We are thrilled to announce that Owen Flannery and Ted Hintz from the East Hampton Rotary Club have generously donated a 50-foot semi-truck and a 26-foot box truck to transport the collected materials. This incredible contribution will significantly enhance our ability to deliver aid to those in need in Asheville.

PDG Jack Solomon is coordinating this transportation relief effort, and will be working to facilitate what will be a heavy lift to fill these trucks with the needed supplies.

Collection Drive Details
We will be conducting a collection drive on Tuesday, October 8th and loading these trucks with the life-saving supplies, with the Truck Loading Schedule as follows:

Madison Stop & Shop (128 Samson Rock Dr, Madison, CT 06443) - 11:00 AM
Connecticut Engravers (80 Rowe Ave # A, Milford, CT 06461) - 12:00 PM
Norwalk Stop & Shop (385 Connecticut Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06854) - 1:30 PM

Once all items are collected, the trucks will be driven directly from Connecticut to Asheville, North Carolina. There, the supplies will be distributed to the Rotary district in Asheville, ensuring that your donations reach those most affected by Hurricane Helene in that area.

Items Needed

We are collecting the following items:

Canned or packaged food with a long shelf life (especially cases of Ramen, Pasta, and Rice)
Paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, baby diapers)
Small generators (if available)
Animal feed (horse, goat, and chicken feed)
Pet food and cat litter
Water (low priority)

How You Can Help
Share this information with your club members and encourage them to donate.
Organize collection points within your local area.
Arrange for transportation of collected goods to one of our three main collection points.
Volunteer to help with sorting and loading on the collection day.

Your support is crucial in making this relief effort a success. Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by Hurricane Helene in Asheville.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please don't hesitate to contact Jack Solomon at [email protected].

Thank you! Thank you for your compassion and commitment to Service Above Self.

We are proud to show recent pics of the Chikumbuso Sustainable Farm that our rotary sponsors and is near and dear to our hearts! We want to thank these other rotaries in our district that assisted us with funding through a District Managed Grant: Fairfield, Groton, Ledyard, New London, Madison, Norwich, and Norwich Sunrise, Westport, Westport Sunrise, & Bridgeport.

The funds helped pay for: farm equipment, fencing, a water pump and water tank, generator, farm tools, seeds, and a chicken coop! The self sustaining farm land with crops directly benefits over 500 children for lunch, as well as families in the Chikumbuso Community:-)
