The LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour was created in 2008 to recognize the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, Friends of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, and the Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club joined forces to produce the first ride that attracted about 460 cyclists. Since that time the number of riders has increased considerably. The LBJ 100 B
icycle Tour provides a different experience than what visitors normally have at the Park. Johnson were not usual cyclists, their children and grandchildren spent many hours riding the roadways of the LBJ Ranch and surrounding country roads of Gillespie and Blanco counties. Luci Johnson, the unofficial heroine of the LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour, has traditionally joined her husband Ian Turpin for this ride, completing one of the routes before returning to guide her own tour in the afternoon. Luci once explained, "Ian introduced me to bicycling on the ranch many years ago and all the family had bikes at the ready throughout Mom's (Lady Bird Johnson) life." The family continues to enjoy the LBJ Ranch, but following the death of Mrs. Johnson in 2007, the ranch was opened for tours by vehicle, bicycle or foot. National Park Service recognizes the importance of varied experiences and outdoor recreation. The Park’s management and staff fully endorse and support the annual event. Funds raised through registrations, sponsors, and donations support educational, recreational, and historic preservation projects in the Park.
