Established in 1974, North American Family Institute (NAFI | NFI) is a private, nonprofit human service agency dedicated to providing community-based mental and behavioral health care. NAFI is the parent company of four regional subsidiaries across eight states: NFI North, NAFI CT | NY | RI, NFI Vermont, and NFI MA, NAFI FL. Separate from the work of our subsidiaries, NAFI runs two programs designed to fulfill special initiatives, Youth & Police Initiative and Homecare Choices. Our programs are built upon the philosophy that people are capable of meaningful change and that, with a supportive environment, the right tools, and opportunities for growth, every individual can become successful in their own home and community.

In 1974, Dr. Yitzhak Bakal founded Northeastern Family Institute (NFI) as a community-based alternative to more restrictive institutional settings for court-involved youth.

Since then, NAFI | NFI has continued to evolve alongside the communities we serve, creating new mental and behavioral health programs that respond to emerging and unmet needs. Today, our network includes more than 100 locally connected programs that serve over 10,000 individuals and families each year.

Our Dr. Bakal Empowerment Fund continues this philosophy by assisting individuals and families that receive or have received services from NAFI | NFI to realize their goal of living successfully within their home and community.

We are proud to recognize our 13th Leadership Development Cohort who, over the past 6 months, have strengthened their leadership skills, explored what it means to lead effectively, and gained hands-on experience with their own leadership practice.

Their dedication to excellence and professional growth reflects the values that make NAFI | NFI such a special organization.

This September, the 19 employees that make up this remarkable group will graduate from NAFI | NFI’s Leadership Development Training, bringing the total number of program graduates to nearly 300 employees since its inception.

Our Stoneham team enjoyed a wonderful summer outing this week, exploring Newburyport Harbor and sharing a meal together afterwards. It was great to see everyone and enjoy the sunshine with this fantastic group.
