Last week, DeKalb Parks Dept. welcomed the Friends of Hairston Park, to a guided tour of Hairston Park Lake Restoration Project. Excitement filled the air as we experienced first hand, the progress of this long-awaited improvement. The project includes an improved dam siphon system, a new bridge connection, more accessible greenspace, and a wide trail around the upper lake and partially to the lower lake.

We can't wait to see aquatic life return especially our resident turtles, and celebrate the official reopening of the lake this fall!

Stay tuned for the announcement of the lake stocking. We'll share details as soon as the stocking date is confirmed.

Yesterday, Friends of Hairston Park proudly hosted Park Pride's 2nd Friday Walk!

Participants enjoyed a beautiful morning exploring the park, getting a firsthand look at the ongoing lake repair project, and experiencing our new nature trail. This trail is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together. It was started by dedicated  volunteers and later completed with the support of Park Maintenance staff.

Along the way, guests had the opportunity to enjoy our Serenity Garden and learn from the interpretive signs that help tell the story of our park's natural environment.

A special thank you to our fellow Friends of Park groups and park advocates who came out to join us. Your presence and support are appreciated. We look forward to seeing you again soon and celebrating the completion of the lake restoration with us!

Volunteer Spotlight!

Meet 7-year old Joshua, one of our shining young volunteers! For over 3 years, Joshua has been a dedicated part of Friends Hairston Park’s volunteer family, alongside his grandmother, Germaine Rumph, through the Kingdom Life Christian Center Outreach Ministry. He helps keep the park clean by picking up litter, moving mulch on volunteer workdays, and participating in events at Hairston Park. He is energetic, committed and always brings a smile and a positive spirit.  

Joshua shows a level of responsibility and leadership beyond his years. "He is always offering to help at home and church," says his grandmother. When he’s not volunteering, he enjoys soccer, video games, reading, and seafood.  We’re proud to celebrate his commitment, every and his big heart.
