The Stone Mountain Community Garden is located at VFW Park and is operated as an official committee and program of the City of Stone Mountain and in partnership with the DeKalb Extension and Georgia Master Gardeners in DeKalb County. The Stone Mountain Community Garden (SMCG) was founded in 2009 and has been at its current location since 2011. The SMCG consists of 50+ individual garden plots which are 4-feet by 12-feet in size, a composting site, herb garden, wildflower patch, and a food pantry garden. The individual garden plots are just that, plots managed and gardened by individuals. The food pantry garden is managed by our Master Gardener partners and volunteers, all produce grown in this area are then donated to the local food pantry. In the past year, the garden has donated over 1,000 pounds of produce to the food pantry. Gardeners are required to sign a yearly use agreement and pay a yearly $35 fee, and commit to volunteering a minimum of 8 hours of service at the garden per year. Money collected is used to supplement the running and management of the SMCG. Use agreements are due by April 30th of each calendar year. The number of plots is limited. Stone Mountain Community Garden at VFW Park Hosts Brunch Commemorating 15th Anniversary by Victoria Hall, Crystal Emelife and Columbus Brown On June 6th, 2026 the Stone Mountain Community Garden at VFW Park (Community Garden) hosted members, friends, Dekalb County Commissioner, the Mayor, City Council Members, and Master Gardeners. They gathered around tables featuring dishes made with ingredients harvested from the garden. The occasion marked the 15th anniversary of the Community Garden. The collaborative assembly showcased people from different cultures, generations and backgrounds—creating a shared space where relationships were cultivated and knowledge was exchanged, highlighting the growth of the Community Garden throughout the years. To fully appreciate this momentous occasion, it is important to note that since the partnership between the City of Stone Mountain and the DeKalb County/University of Georgia Extension Service began in 2011, over 17,470 pounds of fresh food from the Food Pantry Garden has been donated to to the Stone Mountain Ecumenical Food Pantry to feed members of the local community with food insufficiencies. This year-round effort has assisted over 4,340 local families that experienced food insufficiencies. The Community Garden hosts 54 plots for individuals and families of the community, maintains an apiary, composting systems, an herb garden, children’s garden, and a greenhouse. The garden is run totally by volunteers. Master Gardeners and volunteers can be seen daily; but especially on Saturday mornings—teaching monthly classes, sharing their experiences, and offering a helping hand where needed. The purpose of the garden became visually clear as the brunch came to a close. Participants were satiated by delicious and nutritious foods; including delights such as: hibiscus tea, salads, quiche, carrot pesto, cakes, pies, sour dough bread, blueberry muffins, and jollof rice. As the sign says at the entryway, “We Grow Community.” The garden provides land that not only feeds friends, family, neighbors, and the greater Stone Mountain area – but it is also a grounding space to steward the earth while fostering peace, joy, and community.!
