Our anniversary year ended with a big party at Lakefalls Lodge last Saturday, Nov 2—the closest weekend to when the original charter request was accepted.

We mingled, dined, sang Happy Birthday to Stoddard, and danced with 140 of our neighbors, many of them new friends we met over the year at 36 different events all over town!

In tribute to our townspeople of 50 years ago, who once dug a pit next to Town Hall and roasted a pig from someone’s farm, we enjoyed roast pork and many other delicious foods from a local caterer.

What a finale! 🎉💃🕺 🎆

We ended our Discover Stoddard series of hikes on a picture-perfect New England fall day, with over 50 people walking through the woods to learn about our long-ago neighbors, the Hermit of Taylor Pond and the independent millionairess who built Lakefalls Lodge. As well as a bonus episode about another local who became a star of P.T. Barnum’s show.

Thanks as always to Alan Rumrill, who led the hike and shared his knowledge, the owners who opened their properties, and the stalwart chefs who produced the barbeque, including the burger-flipper who doesn’t eat red meat. It was a great finale. 🍂🍁

🍁 The weather looks great for this Saturday’s final “Discover Stoddard” hike!

Join us this Sat, 10/5 from 10am to 1pm, for a hike and a history lesson on the Old Town Road. It’s an easy, approx. 2-mile round trip route on fairly flat terrain.

Led by ALAN RUMRILL, we’ll visit the homestead and gravesite of PERLEY SWETT, the last of the old-time Stoddard Yankees, whose life has fascinated locals and made headlines. His story is captured in the popular book, *Perley: The True Story of a New Hampshire Hermit*. Along the way, Alan will share stories of Perley's remarkable life.

🍖 After the hike, we’ll enjoy a barbecue and learn about FLORENCE BROOKS ATEN, the woman behind the Adirondack-style lodge built in the 1920s, which now serves as the heart of Lakefalls Lodge.

📍 Meet at the Lakefalls parking area, on the Granite Lake side of Stoddard. (For directions, simply enter 'Lakefalls Lodge' into Google Maps.) 🗺️

We hope you can join us for this walk through history!

🌳 Walk the Old Town Road and Learn About Perley Swett! Join us Oct 5th for a Get to Know Stoddard Hike (10am to 1pm), approx. one mile each way, with fairly flat terrain.

Perley Swett died in the 1970s as probably the last old-time Stoddard Yankee still living on the original family farm. His colorful history filled newspaper articles during his lifetime, and a more recent popular book called “Perley: The True Story of a New Hampshire Hermit.”

Join Alan Rumrill to walk to his homestead and gravesite, hearing the stories along the way. Afterward, we’ll have a barbeque and learn about Florence Brooks Aten, who built the Adirondack style lodge in the 1920s that is now the center of Lakefalls.

📍 Meet at the parking area of Lakefalls, which is on the Granite Lake side of Stoddard (Get directions by entering Lakefalls Lodge into Google Maps). 🗺️
