The California Department of Justice released “A Strategic Plan to Sustain California’s Record Progress Against Gun Violence” - a report documenting how Californians reached its lowest rates of firearm deaths ever.

The report underscores a growing crisis: proven homicide-reduction strategies are currently being undermined by funding shortages. Prioritizing robust investment in community-led safety initiatives has never been more urgent.

We’ve seen firsthand what happens when community violence intervention programs have the resources AND the funding they need — and what happens when they don’t!

COMMUNITY VIOLENCE INTERVENTION WORKERS are vital resources to the safety and well being of so many communities across the state! We are proud to work with many CVI workers daily and will continue to advocate for more funding to their incredible work.

That’s why we’re asking California lawmakers to INCREASE the CalVIP budget by $55 million because it’s literally saving lives. Our communities cannot afford anything less!

We’ve seen firsthand what happens when community violence intervention programs have the resources AND funding they need—and what happens when they don’t.

Community Violence Interventionists are vital resources for safer communities across the state. This is what their work looks like every day: meeting people where they are, interrupting cycles of violence, and helping communities heal.

That’s why we are urging California lawmakers to increase the CalVIP budget by $55 million because it’s literally saving lives. Our communities can’t afford anything less.

We work at the intersection of survivors and formerly incarcerated folks who work to create changes in policy, programs, and community in order to promote true safety for all members of society.

Let’s celebrate survivors of all walks of life this week and every week by uplifting their stories and supporting advocacy that promotes their healing.

As we begin National Crime Victims Rights Week, we want to officially announce the historic THRIVE Act legislation for youth survivors of gun violence! 📝‼️🫶✊

The Trauma, Healing and Resilience Investment for Victimized or Exposed Youth (T.H.R.I.V.E. Act) sponsored by / and and would for the first time guarantee free mental health services to children and youth survivors of gun violence!

AB 2247 will move to the assembly Health Committee this week. This ground breaking legislation would mark a fundamental shift in how the state supports its youngest victims of crime.

About 2,000 young people are injured or killed by gun violence in California each year. National data shows fewer than one in three youth survivors actually receive mental health services within six months of experience this type of trauma.

Let’s get loud on supporting this issue! Join us on Tuesday May 5th in Sacramento to call on state leaders to prioritize this bill and others like it that would help survivors heal and stop cycles of harm and violence.

“It’s about trying to hold two perspectives at the same time, which is not an easy thing to do,” said Lee. “Even though there have been some gains made, even one loss of life to gun violence is devastating.“
