A short 9s video of the planet Saturn captured using a smart phone held up to an eyepiece of a 14 inch diameter aperture Newtonian telescope on a Dobsonian mount. Magnification was approximately 250 times, so it drifted quickly across the field of view showing how the Earth’s rotation makes objects move across the sky. Imaged from Oak Grove Park in Stockton CA on Saturday 10/17 at our monthly Astronomy in the Park event.

Here is the Wizard Nebula (NGC 7380) in the constellation Cepheus. Imaged near Valley Springs CA on 10/3/26 with Askar 71F scope at f/6.9, AM5 mount, ASI533MC camera, and ASIAIR controller. Integration time was nearly 3.5 hours with 7.5 minute subframes.

Groundboard nearly finalized for my utra-compact 20" f/3 alt-az scope featuring a meniscus mirror. For the three support stations, one will have the tracking servo motor seen here, another will have a positioning encoder, the third just holds scope weight and is a roller bearing. More later . . .

Here is the same Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) along with open star cluster M52 in the constellation Cassiopeia as previously posted but with a different color palette similar to Hubble. It shows how the color can be manipulated by changing RGB color channels and adjusting saturation and hue. It was Imaged near Valley Springs CA on 9/12/26 with Askar 71F scope at f/6.9, AM5 mount, ASI533MC camera, and ASIAIR controller. Integration time was nearly 4 hours with 7.5 minute subframes.

Here are two new photos. A wide shot showing several objects including Lagoon and Trifid nebulas, M21 cluster, along with IC 4685 and NGC 6546. Integration time was 38 minutes with 2 minute subframes. Other photo is IC 1848 the Soul Nebula. Integration time was 1 hr and 52 minutes with 2 minute subframes. Both shot near Knights Ferry, CA on 9/5/26. Equipment was WO RedCat 51 scope, ZWO ASI533MC camera, AM5 mount, and ASIAIR computer.

Does the Moon have a handle?

This photo of the Moon was taken at the recent Astronomy In The Park at Oak Grove Regional Park on August 22, 2026 hosted by the Stockton Astronomical Society. The lower right edge of the Moon appears to have a handle big enough to carry the whole Moon. Here’s the real explanation: The rim of Sinus Iridum, the Bay of Rainbows, stands out in brilliant light well before the crater floor emerges from darkness, giving it the look of a handle. The Stockton Astronomical Society will be at Oak Grove Regional Park tomorrow night Saturday 7/18 at sunset around 8:30pm. Rumor has it we may have some rather large Obsession telescopes available with a 20 inch and/or 30 inch diameter primary mirror similar to the scope in the photo. They should make for great views.
