We had 8 species. We had 21 newly banded, 1 recapture, and 2 unbanded. Some of the species included Eastern Phoebe, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-breasted Chat, Indigo Bunting, and Orchard Oriole.

In the morning it started cool but turned into a beautiful day. We banded 18 new, had 2 recaps, and 1 unbanded (ruby throated hummingbird) for a total of 5 species: common yellowthroat, indigo bunting, blue grosbeak, Savannah sparrow, and Western Palm warbler. We were also treated to a stack of new bird bags made by one of our long-time volunteers Anne.

All birds handled under the guidelines of federal and state permits.

This is what your support looks like in the field. Every donation goes toward the supplies and technology that make our research possible, from basic supplies to funding new radio tags to study Swamp Sparrow migratory routes.

Grassland birds are declining faster than any other group and through long-term research, we’re working to better understand and protect them.

What keeps bird research going in Georgia? People like you!

The Panola Mountain Bird Banding Station is fully volunteer-run, and alongside Jekyll Island Bird Banding Station (JIBS), we’ve founded the Georgia Bird Observatory, a nonprofit supporting our research.

Every project we do is possible because of donations and our volunteers.

Over the next couple weeks, we’re excited to share more about our work and how you can help support it!

We caught some cool species yesterday and it was a nice overcast day! Wilson’s snipe was the most exciting, followed by a Mourning Dove. We have caught both before but not often.

Totals: 15 new, 8 recap, 3 unbanded, 1 Eastern bluebird banded out of a nest box. Two of the unbanded were Ruby-throated hummingbirds which we don’t have the training or equipment to band so we just extract and release them.

All birds handled under appropriate federal and state permits.
