📕Building Bright Futures Through Literacy 📙

The ability to read is one of the most powerful tools we can give a child. Literacy is not just about decoding words on a page - it opens the door to understanding, curiosity, and lifelong learning. For students, strong reading skills are the foundation for success in every subject, from math and science to history and the arts.

Recognizing the importance of early literacy, volunteers from the ✨Volunteers for Elementary School Literacy (VESL) ✨program are stepping in to help young readers thrive. VESL is a partnership between us (Stillwater Sunrise Rotary Club) and the Stillwater Area Public Schools, built on Rotary’s long-standing commitment to literacy as a foundational pillar.

This school year VESL will expand to include Lily Lake Elementary School along with the six other elementary schools. Volunteers are needed to meet this growing demand. If you have a love for reading and a heart for helping children succeed, consider joining the VESL team. Email [email protected] for more information.

🎓STRIVE Mentors go Back to School ✏️

If you are interested in learning more about STRIVE and how to contribute to STRIVE please contact Christian Milker at https://sunrotary.org/strive.php

Another year of STRIVE mentoring kicks off in September. STRIVE stands for Students Taking Renewed Interest in the Value of Education. The program is sponsored by the Stillwater Sunrise Rotary Club and connects volunteer adults from the community with 11th and 12th graders at Stillwater Area Public Schools. In biweekly meetings at the school, the students and mentors share perspectives on important life lessons and the skills needed to be a successful adult.

Topics range from the practical, like how to manage a budget… to more philosophical, like how to live with integrity or how to handle setbacks.

STRIVE Scholarships supported by the rotary club will be awarded based on participation in volunteer events among other criteria. Last year, the SAHS students helped successfully organized the collection of used mobility devices at the school and in the process developed leadership skills and had a lot of fun together doing it.

Finishing the “Bridge the Valley Bike Rally” was a huge milestone for Kate. In 2025, Kate underwent two surgeries to resolve severe pain in her right knee and foot, which left her unable to walk. She wore a leg brace and used crutches until January 2026. This past winter and spring, she focused on improving her gait, walking up and down stairs, and rebuilding muscle. Time for healing, prayers, and a lot of hard work paid off. Once free of the leg brace and able to walk on her own, Kate started biking. Cycling was easier than walking, so she set her sights on finishing the 25-mile bike event at “Bridge the Valley Bike Rally.” Kate (pictured, right) enlisted her close friend, Stephanie (left), as a training partner, and together they trained for the rally, finishing 45 minutes ahead of their goal. Crossing that finish line was a victory a long time in the making!

Thanks Kate, Stephanie and everyone for a successful 2026 Bridge the Valley Bike Rally! See you all next year! ( bridgethevalley.org )

We did a user survey at the Ramsey Grove Park pollinator plot this Saturday, when our Rotarian crew was there for the regular scheduled maintenance. Wings down, the pollinators prefer the wild bergamot this time of year. With more rain, more mulch, and enthusiastic Rotary care, the garden is looking great this year - and it's full of flying and crawling things. Check it out at 150 Grove St. S in Stillwater. And you're welcome to visit meetings and events to check us out any time - https://sunrotary.org.

A number of our members started yesterday with a 7:00 a.m. board meeting, spending 90 minutes in a conference room planning and organizing the work that keeps our service projects running smoothly.

Then came the important meeting. 😄

At 4:30, we gathered at Rio 1854 MN on the St. Croix in Stillwater for great food, drinks, beautiful views, and even better company. Time together outside is a fun way our club stays energized and connected.

The mobility devices we collected here on June 7 made their way safely to Chihuahua, Mexico where our partners there distributed them at an event on July 14. Thanks to everyone one in communities here in Minnesota and Wisconsin that helped us with our mission to make our local and global communities a better place to live. These pictures suggest we've had some success, together!

Normally, mobility devices for this program would go all the way to Africa, like last year's batch did. But the mid-east conflict has paralyzed shipping to Africa, and we wanted these devices to go to work as soon as possible. And they have.
