🎉 Surprise recognition 🚲🌎

Last Tuesday at Stillwater Sunrise Rotary Club weekly meeting at the The Lowell Inn Event Center, we had a special surprise visitor — Rotary District 5960 Governor Glenn Bowers — who stopped by to recognize one of our own: Rick Heidick 👏

Rick was honored for his incredible international work in Nicaragua, where he has made 14 trips helping local communities build sustainable futures through self-sufficient turmeric farming and small agricultural businesses. His work is rooted in something Rotary believes deeply: empowering communities to create lasting change.

But Rick’s impact doesn’t stop at international service.

Closer to home, Rick also leads our club’s signature fundraiser — Bridge The Valley Bike Rally 🚴‍♀️💙 Funds raised support local organizations making a difference right here in our community, including past grantees like 21 Roots Farm and Limitless Cycling (just to name a few!). 📅 Mark your calendars — this year’s ride is August 9 and it’s an amazing event for riders, families, volunteers, and supporters alike. 💛We appreciated our recent opportunity to help out at Valley Outreach💛

Club members and family helped with operations in the 🍎warehouse, cooler, grocery floor and the clothing store (Style Exhange) 👗during a weekday afternoon shift where they always have need. Other times we schedule for evenings or weekends so it works better for our club members that are not retired.

It's actually quite a bit of work over 3 hours! But working with friends, doing useful stuff - there really is joy in service.

🎥 What if the mobility equipment collecting dust in your garage could help someone walk again?

Every year, thousands of crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, and mobility devices sit unused and go to landfills — while around the world, people go without the equipment that could restore movement, and independence.

💙This June, help us change that. 🌍

Stillwater Sunrise Rotary is collecting used mobility equipment for Crutches4Africa and giving it a second life for someone who truly needs it. That extra item in storage could become someone’s path back to school, work, healthcare, or everyday life.

We’re collecting:

➕ Other mobility support equipment

Lovin' the rain! This week's rain is making the most of our club's recent work on the pollinator space we support in Ramsey Grove park. Pictured is less than half of the team - others cut back old growth ahead of time, loaded mulch, or simply ducked the photo! But our crew of Rotarians, friends and family made quick work of what had become quite a mess over the winter. The perennials are coming up nicely this year, and we have some new plants ordered that we'll plant in the next couple weeks. Stop by the park soon and see if the pollinators have also found it yet!

Got unused crutches, walkers, canes, or a wheelchair sitting in storage? 👀

They could do a lot more good in the world. Rotary clubs across the state are collecting gently used mobility equipment to help restore movement, independence, and dignity for people around the world 🌍

Stillwater Sunrise Rotary is hosting a Mobility Equipment Donation Event on June 6th at Courage Kenny in Stillwater to support Crutches4Africa. We’re accepting:
♿ Wheelchairs
🦯 Canes
🩼 Crutches
🚶 Walkers
🥾 Walking boots
➕ Other mobility devices

One item sitting in a garage = life-changing support for someone else.

Help spread the word 📣
Share with neighbors, churches, hospitals, clinics, community groups, or anyone with extra equipment they no longer need.

Last week, our Rotary Youth Exchange student from Japan, Minori, shared her inspiring 8-month journey in Minnesota. 🇯🇵➡️🇺🇸

Just three years ago, Minori could not speak English. Determined to pursue her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher (Teacher without Borders) and to experience life outside her comfort zone, she worked hard to learn English and embrace new opportunities.

She described American high school life as “like a movie” — yellow school buses, lockers, Halloween, and students freely expressing themselves. She even joined Cross Country and Alpine Skiing despite never trying either sport before.

Minori also spoke honestly about the challenges of learning a new language and culture, and how much the support of her host families and Rotary Youth Exchange leaders meant to her along the way.

She shared many favorite memories from her host families and who made Minnesota such a special place ❤️ Minori is pictured here with her host families — Terra LeMire, Angie Rowe, the Sara Regan Letourneau family — and our Rotary Youth Officer, Kristine Bowditch and Diane Wallenta.

At our partner club in India, Pune Tilak Road, our Rotarian friend Prafulla Pendharkar has worked tirelessly to with our Margie Horning to obtain a grant - and it is a delight to report that the grant was approved on April 10, and the funds were transferred on April 23. The equipment purchase process has started!

Grant? For what? It is purchasing and supporting an ultrasound machine to expand the services at Walawalkar hospital near Pune, India. This hospital serves rural residents, many for free, and it was seeking to expand services so that they could reduce wait times. More people will now be able to get appropriate diagnosis and treatment - real impact for an estimated 500-1000 of our "neighbors" in the Pune area. (Just a few of the thousands that benefited from our Bridge the Valley event last August! bridgethevalley.org)

Thanks to everyone that helped on this one, to District 5960 and 3131 for "DDF" funding, Pune Tilak for major funding, and to the US clubs that made generous contributions to the project: Prior Lake, Lakeville, Saint Paul, Hudson Daybreak, Anoka, and Arden Hills/Shoreview.

Your local Rotary club in SE Minnesota and Western Wisconsin (and Strive students at Stillwater Area Public Schools) is collecting used mobility equipment on June 6 so it can be redistributed to the people that need it most by Crutches4Africa.org. You get some closet space - your global neighbor gets a new life! In Stillwater, drop-off is at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation, 1460 Curve Crest Blvd, Stillwater, MN 55082 from 9 AM to 6 PM. We met at beautiful Pioneer Park this morning, and Andy Weaver was today's speaker, along with his red-tailed hawk. Andy is a retired Stillwater Area High School teacher, a master falconer, and a tireless advocate for the majestic raptors of the St. Croix Valley (and beyond). What a delight to hear from Andy again. And we enjoyed still-warm bagels from our local Bruegger's Bagels (yum!) for breakfast, thanks to Tim Trooien's good planning.
