❓ NCIA FAQ: What's the Difference Between Certified Seed and Farm-Saved (Bin-Run) Seed?

While both can be used for planting, there are important differences.

🔵 Certified Seed
✔ Produced under an official seed certification program
✔ Field inspected for varietal purity and quality standards
✔ Laboratory tested for germination, purity, and noxious w**ds
✔ Maintains verified varietal identity
✔ Tagged with an official certification label

🌾 Farm-Saved (Bin-Run) Seed
• Seed retained from a previous harvest for replanting
• Not field inspected through the certification program
• May or may not be cleaned or laboratory tested
• Seed quality and varietal purity are not independently verified

Certified seed provides growers with confidence that the seed has met established certification standards through independent inspection and testing.

🌱 With certified seed, quality isn't assumed, it's verified. necrop.org

Does certified seed make a difference at harvest?

Research and field data consistently show certified seed can out-yield farm-saved seed by 1–10 bushels per acre, with most years averaging around 3–5 bushels per acre.

That advantage comes from:
• Verified germination
• Genetic purity
• Fewer w**d seeds
• Consistent performance

When every bushel counts, quality at planting matters.
