"The most consequential moves in this movement rarely look like a headline. They look like a Federal Register filing. They look like compliance language buried in subsection 200.205. They look like a man named Russell Vought, the author of Project 2025 and one of the most openly Christian nationalist figures in this administration, quietly redesigning the machinery of how the federal government decides who gets money and who does not."

From time to time, we will feature books that we think are valuable in helping us all meet the current moment. Today’s feature in this “Book Blurb” series is 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 by Heather Cox Richardson.

The author describes the struggle between our country’s founding ideal, that “all men are created equal,” and an opposing hierarchical view claiming some groups were more worthy than others. The author traces this clash of beliefs from the 1930s backlash against the New Deal (with references back to the civil war and earlier) to the time of the 2024 election. She demonstrates that American democracy has survived so far not because we are somehow “exceptional,” but rather because “marginalized people…kept it in the forefront of national experience” and “minorities and women…consistently, persistently, and bravely insisted on their right to equality before the law and to a say in their government” (p. xviii). Therefore, despite the precarious position we currently find ourselves in, our history can provide inspiration to keep working towards a better future.

This book is available (with a bit of a wait) from the Stillwater Public Library in print, e-book, and audio book formats. If you prefer to buy it, we encourage you to prioritize local independent booksellers as much as possible.

While you're busy being bombarded with all the scary advertising against State Question 832... here's something to think about.

These four bright red Republican states have higher state minimum wages than Oklahoma's minimum. (Ours is the default federal minimum.)

Take a look at how they're doing.

If raising the minimum wage automatically meant job losses and business closures, we'd expect to see real evidence of that in these states. So far, the sky hasn't fallen.

What does that tell you about the claims being made against SQ832?
