Minnesota has environmental laws in place designed to protect the environment and us from pesticide contamination and other pollutants. BUT when state agencies don't do their job of enforcing those laws, and instead treat corporate polluters like "customers", we all lose. You can help by talking with Minnesota candidates. Ask them "how will you ensure environmental laws are enforced?" Find out more on this website about this issue here: https://peoplenotpolluters.com

The Pollinator Friendly Alliance has been doing pollinator surveys.

Biological surveys provide support for much conservation work. Knowing what species live in an area, their abundance, and challenges helps us to provide them the best habitat possible and understand how to protect them. Our biology staff is at work in the field this summer.

Big environmental news - Gov. Walz protects the Boundary Waters!

The Boundary Waters just received the strongest statewide protection in its history!!

The Boundary Waters just received the strongest statewide protection in its history.

This morning, Governor Tim Walz signed an executive order to keep copper-sulfide mining out of the Rainy River Headwaters. The watershed that flows directly into the Boundary Waters.

Here's what it does:

🚫 DNR and the Pollution Control Agency must stop all environmental review and permitting work on sulfide mining proposals in the watershed
🚫 No new state mineral leases
🚫 No new surface leases for tailings or mine waste
🚫 No DNR cooperation with federal environmental reviews
✍️ And it directs the DNR to draft legislative language prohibiting copper-sulfide mining in the watershed

Read that last one again. Minnesota's governor just told his agency to write the ban.

It has been a hard year for the Boundary Waters. Congress stripped federal protection from 225,000 acres of public land surrounding the wilderness. Fire devastated country many of us have paddled our whole lives.

The mining industry and its political allies will fight this. They have the lawyers and the money, and we should expect them to use both. That fight is coming.

But today we're thankful for decisive action. Thankful for you. Thankful to have a place like the Boundary Waters worth defending. 💙

The 24 Acre conversion at the Big Marine Biodiversity Project is underway. Not only will these agricultural fields be converted to native habitat for wildlife, pollinators, and birds; additionally, we are removing a pesticide load from the agricultural fields that was running into the nearby Big Marine waterways.

We started with a 2025 Fall and Winter seeding, and followed up this spring with a conservation mowing to knock back w**d competition. This Fall we will be planting ground strawberry for turtle forage, and overseeding slopey areas where the seed ran down with the snow pack. You can watch the progress on our website at: https://www.pollinatorfriendly.org/habitat-projects

Thanks to the volunteers, supporters, and the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation.
