This is why Pollinator Friendly Alliance works to protect beavers as part of our mission to increase biodiversity for pollinators.
Beavers are some of nature’s greatest engineers and one of the most beneficial animals for the environment. Their dams create wetlands that help reduce flooding, filter pollutants from water, recharge groundwater, and provide habitat for countless species including frogs, turtles, fish, dragonflies, ducks, otters, and songbirds.
These wetlands also help during droughts by holding water on the landscape longer and can even reduce wildfire severity by keeping areas moist and green. Scientists have found that areas with beavers often support far more biodiversity than areas without them.
For thousands of years, beavers shaped healthy ecosystems across North America. Instead of viewing them as pests, we should recognize the incredible role they play in restoring nature and supporting wildlife. 🦫
