This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the artists, musicians, and music makers whose creativity and cultural roots have left a lasting mark on the world of music.From preserving musical traditions and sharing stories of heritage to blending cultures and creating new sounds, Hispanic artists have continually shaped the way music is created, experienced, and remembered. Their work reflects the richness and diversity of Hispanic communities and highlights the many histories, identities, and traditions that make up the culture.

Through their music, these artists have celebrated where they come from while inspiring generations to embrace their own stories and voices. We’re proud to spotlight these influential artists and honor the lasting impact they have made on music and culture.

🎉 Welcome to National Headquarters, Aurora Goodnight! 🎉

Please join us in welcoming Aurora Goodnight as our new Membership Services Coordinator for Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma! 💙🎶

Aurora is a 2026 graduate of Oklahoma State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Industry and performed with the Cowboy Marching Band, Symphonic & Concert Bands, and Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble.

A member of the Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, Aurora has served her chapter as Historian, Secretary, and President and previously served as the Southwest District Secretary/Treasurer. She also participated in the National Delegation as a proxy at both the 2023 and 2025 National Conventions.

Aurora brings experience in financial and administrative support, along with a strong background in the college band community, to her new role at National Headquarters.

We’re excited to welcome Aurora to the NHQ team and look forward to the dedication and enthusiasm she will bring to serving the members and chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome! 🎺✨

Originally conceived as a celebration of Italian American heritage, Columbus Day was first observed as a federal holiday in 1937. Celebrated on the same day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday in the United States that celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. First celebrated in Berkeley, California in 1992, this day of celebration is recognized in many areas across the nation.

Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma join together to recognize the generations of Indigenous Peoples who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.

Focus on Five Black Stripe Spotlight 🎶🖤

The Eta Zeta Chapter at the University of Kentucky has earned their Black Stripe by hosting Marching FUNdamentals, a workshop focused on reinforcing essential marching techniques and strengthening performance across their band program. Following a marching band rehearsal, Chapter members led participants through a review of fundamentals that can sometimes get lost as the season progresses. Sisters took turns teaching different techniques while others worked directly with participants to provide feedback, reinforce proper ex*****on, and ensure everyone had an opportunity to improve.

Through For Greater Practice, Eta Zeta turned purpose into impact by giving their time and talents to strengthen the skills of their fellow band members. Their commitment to musicianship, service, and performance excellence demonstrates how intentional practice can help build greater bands. Congratulations to the Eta Zeta Chapter on earning your Black Stripe! 🖤

Road to Bethesda | October: Fundraising

A Chapter fundraiser works best when it starts with a clear goal. How many members hope to attend National Convention, and how much support will they need to get to Bethesda?

Build your Chapter’s plan from there:
🎯 Set a fundraising target based on expected travel, lodging, registration, and meals.
🤝 Ask your band program, campus offices, alumni, and community partners about support.
🎶 Choose activities your Chapter can manage, such as a benefit performance, merchandise sale, or donation campaign.
📊 Track what comes in, what each activity costs, and how funds will be used. Share the progress with your Chapter.

You don’t have to raise the full amount in one event. Start in October, give every fundraiser a purpose, and keep building toward July 13–16, 2027.

Women in Music Spotlight: Marin Alsop 🎶💙

Maestra Alsop is an American conductor. She is the first woman to win the Koussevitzky Prize for conducting and the first conductor to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. She is Music Director Laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Chief Conductor of the Ravinia Festival and of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008 and to the American Philosophical Society in 2020.

After failing three times to win admission to Juilliard's conducting program, Alsop founded the New York String Ensemble in 1981, the female jazz ensemble String Fever, and in 1984 Concordia, a 50-piece orchestra specializing in twentieth-century American music. In 1983 she was concertmaster in a recording session of Philip Glass's chamber opera The Photographer. In 1985, she played violin on the original Broadway cast recording of the musical Big River. She won the Koussevitzky Prize as outstanding student conductor at the Tanglewood Music Center in 1989, where she met her hero and future mentor Leonard Bernstein. She was the first woman to win the prize. In 2005, Alsop was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the """"Genius Grant,"""" in recognition of her contributions to orchestral leadership and contemporary classical music.

Alsop is actively touring as a guest conductor worldwide and serving in major artistic leadership positions with international orchestras.
