Black Heritage Camp: From the Bronx to Minnesota is almost here!

We’re excited to welcome April Dinwoodie as our Caregivers Keynote, presenting “What Adoption Can Teach All Families: The 12‑Month Playbook,” and facilitating our transracial adoptee voices panel.

April Dinwoodie is a Black/Bi-racial transracial adoptee raised in predominantly white New England communities. Her lived experience shapes her work as a writer, podcaster, speaker, coach, and consultant dedicated to healthy identity development, stronger relationships, and navigating differences of race, class, and culture.

Please give April Dinwoodie a warm welcome when you see her at camp!

The Black Teens in Action Cohort recently completed their community impact project. Nine teens planned and carried out an effort to support the unhoused by creating and distributing care kits with hygiene items and informational signs.

After participating in community engagement training on the root causes of housing insecurity, the teens—alongside parents and caregivers—distributed 120 food bags and hygiene kits in the Ventura Village neighborhood.

Thank you to Nico's Taco and Tequila Bar for donating 120 burritos and Kwik Trip for gift cards to support the food bags. In total, the teens gave nine hours of service, and we couldn’t be prouder.

We’re excited to introduce Jeremy Hicks, who will be leading a Hip Hop Healing Workshop at our upcoming Black Heritage Camp: From the Bronx to MN.

A two-time GRAMMY-nominated, award‑winning music producer, TryBishop creates impactful hip hop, R&B, and gospel music. He uses hip hop as a powerful tool to inspire self‑expression, confidence, and healing in young people.

We can’t wait for this workshop and for caregivers to experience how music, culture, and healing are woven together to deepen connection and understanding with the children and youth in their care.

Registration for camp ends April 24th, at midnight. - https://www.evolvefamilyservices.org/umojamn/camp

Calling for Black Transracial Adoptees

UMOJA MN is seeking Black adults (18+) who were adopted, fostered, or in kinship care by non‑Black caregivers to share their lived experiences growing up in non‑Black households.

Participants will join a panel and Q&A at our Black Heritage Camp on May 30, offering insight and guidance to parents and caregivers raising Black youth.

Why share your story?
Your perspective can help families deepen their understanding of cultural identity and the experiences of growing up in a transracial household.

Interested in sharing your voice and uplift and educate families? We’d love to hear from you. https://forms.office.com/r/EVRaDj6HTk

We recently hosted a fun Family Connection Day for our UMOJA MN families—a chance to build community and connect outside of our Black Heritage Camp.

On Saturday, families gathered at the Art Shelf for a hands-on art-making experience. Everyone had a wonderful time expressing themselves through painting, collage, and even spray painting. This shared creative time helped strengthen the relationships and bonds formed through UMOJA MN events.

Check out some of the amazing artwork created by our talented participants!
