It's Way Back Wednesday! The Majestic Theater and its Epic 1919 Can Drive with the Stillwater Messenger
The Majestic Theatre stood at 229 South Main Street, in the building Smith + Trade Mercantile now calls home. The distinctive rooflines of both the theater and the Waffle Parlor next door remain unchanged today. The Waffle Parlor building is the current location of Stillwater Olive Oil Co. To the left of the theater, and just visible, is the building that now houses Stillwater Proper. The building on the right side of the photo was the clothing store, I.G. Ziegler, of which Ignatz Ziegler was the proprietor, and is now home to Lolo American Kitchen Stillwater.
The aged label on this photograph dated this photo to 1912. Looking into it, we discovered the photo was actually taken in 1919 - both the main movie feature, "The Unknown Love," as well as the other advertised feature, "Never Say Quit," were released in 1919.
Digging further, we were able to date this photo to Saturday, April 19, 1919. On that day, a tin can contest took place that was part of a broader city clean-up effort. An estimated 25,000 cans were collected and taken to the city dump. Children who brought at least 10 cans were rewarded with a ticket to the afternoon matinee showing of "Never Say Quit," a silent comedy featuring George Walsh. The event was co-sponsored by the Stillwater Messenger and described in an article published in that paper on April 23, 1919, pictured below.
Thanks to the Stillwater Area Historic Newspaper Initiative for making this and other historical Stillwater newspapers available digitally. The photograph is part of Stillwater Public Library's John Runk photograph collection, which you can view in the St. Croix Collection Room anytime the library is open.

It's Way Back Wednesday! Postcard of Stillwater and St. Croix River (1911)
The back of this postcard from 1911 is just as interesting as the front!

The photo shows Stillwater, MN looking west from the Wisconsin side of the river in the waning days of the lumber trade. You can see rafts of lumber south of the pontoon bridge, most likely bound for towns along the Mississippi River. The Union Depot is visible to the north of the bridge on the Stillwater side as are many other recognizable buildings that still exist today such as the Washington County Courthouse, Joseph Wolf Brewing Company, The Freight House, and the Lumbermen's Exchange building. There are several church steeples in view. The library is just out of view to the north of Trinity Lutheran Church.

The back side of the postcard has a short description of Stillwater when it was the 5th most populated city in Minnesota (it's currently 63rd). The note from Laura and Carl O. to Mr. Thor. Carlberg in St. Croix Falls, WI was sent on October 17, 1911. Our best guess is that the note is written in Swedish and is thanking Thor for his kind note and that something was hard to part with or hard to beat. (Are there any Swedish speakers reading this who could give a better translation?). Notice the stamp was one cent.

You can view this postcard and many other historical photos and documents in Stillwater Public Library’s St. Croix Collection Room anytime the library is open.
