It's Way Back Wednesday! Before Stillwater was settled in 1843 (and for a short time after settlement!) the closest mail point to the area was Prairie du Chien. Mail at that time was infrequent and not very dependable, and travel was by foot, boat, or horse.
The first postmaster in Stillwater was Elam Greeley. Greeley Street is named after him! John McKusick, Stillwater’s first mayor and a lumber industry tycoon, was the second postmaster. Believe it or not, the post office was run out of their private homes during this period as there was no official post office building.
The Stillwater post office bounced around to several locations. Construction of the most recognizable Post Office building began in 1903 on the corner of Second and Myrtle Streets. The unique arches really set this building apart! The entire cost of the building, grounds, and furnishing cost around $70,000. This building served as the post office for 60 years.
